Is this good or bad ?
I mean it has potential to be good for an end user, but drives people away from forums perhaps ?
Pros :
It’s a neat idea.
It’s good exposure for a table ?
I can see a future with direct updates of tables ?
Cons :
No Stern is a bit lame
The forums, being able to interact with a table dev, saying thankyou, following a WIP .. perhaps I’m a bit more behind the scenes orientated, but just ripping tables down I don’t think is good.
Thoughts ? / Opinions ? or too early to tell .. ?
Cheers,
al.

November 28, 2016 at 6:09 pm #42385Its beautiful UI. I really wanted to work with freezy here but he didnt want to work it like that :(
VPDB this is primarily being done for all the VPCabs purchasers to download all the NEW table releases via pinballx frontend and have everything auto-install so im not a huge fan but good for Pinballx and VPCabs i guess.

November 28, 2016 at 6:15 pm #42388I was checking it out last night… it is really nice. While I don’t like the element of being geared toward the commercial aspect, like randr is saying… it will really benefit everyone because it is super easy to find everything you need for a table. That would have been really cool if it could have worked together with vpinball.
My big concern was that, because it’s backed by PinballX, that they would go to some kind of pay to access content thing like the PinballX FTP, but they say they are going to keep it free.

November 28, 2016 at 6:19 pm #42390Yeah it certainly is pretty. And that makes sense I suppose, so it will either bridge or polarise the communities more I guess ..
I imagine there will be a lot of tables that don’t make it there either, so the forums still remain relevant to those who just want tables perhaps.
Cheers,
al.

November 28, 2016 at 6:23 pm #42391I cannot imagine just downloading from frontend and not following a wip, or commenting to the community about the build…but some people just want the download and go. Like I said Tom at pbx is a great guy! So I’m sure it will be fine

I think the wording I read on there was .. free for the foreseeable future .. ..
But I’m old and cynical :)

November 28, 2016 at 6:31 pm #42394Yeah, I saw that… my big fear is that a bunch of tables get dumped in there and then all the sudden exclusive rights to sell the content have been claimed… but I’m trying to keep and open mind about it.

November 28, 2016 at 7:05 pm #42396I like the look of the site and I like the idea of bringing all the components together, so we don’t have to go on search and destroy missions all the time.
Making it easy for novices to manage their machines might be a good thing, as it will certainly see the user base grow and VP just get bigger and better….. “but” commercialisation is real possibility and it would be sad if that effected the community based input that has been so effective to date. That said, I don’t really have a problem if at some stage we pay for quality VP tables, PROVIDED that the money goes to the right people and not just some blood sucking leech. (However a renegotiation of the original VP terms would be required for that I guess)
Also, I don’t see it effecting the “community forum” side of things so much at this stage. “Communities are the people” (although having a good guy at the helm is a vital part), but ultimately people will gravitate to where they feel welcomed by the members and where they can get help, without simply being dismissed as another noob or as a crackpot that never shuts up about Poor Man’s DOF or whatever ;)

November 28, 2016 at 7:43 pm #42402I don’t mind a pay to access model. Bandwidth isn’t free, and donations are never enough in our community. What you get here at VPinball is very special indeed. People need to remember that. People wind up paying something to get the access they need at VPF and VPU. It’s a downer that users that have shelled out thousands for a cab and hardware and balk at paying a few measly dollars to access the PinballX FTP. Or donate to sites like Inkochnito that provide raw resources for generating media.
VPDB will not necessarily make things any easier. It will just make it easier to get what they happen to offer. What they have to offer may or may not be the best quality or most current representation of what you were seeking. If you were coming there as a consumer would you know where else to look? Would you bother? Do you think the next generation of table authors are going to come from VPDB?
Final statement: No S.A.M., no me.
I’m a huge PinballX supporter. After all, I’m a moderator there. But I’m probably not going to contribute much to the FTP going forward, seeing as those contributions tend to include S.A.M.-related media anyway. It’s their house and their rules though, so I can respect that POV.

November 28, 2016 at 8:29 pm #42414Growing the user base does not mean developing contributors/authors. Especially if the interface is designed so that you can run in, grab your shit, and get out and play.
I don’t really have a dog in this hunt. It’s a VirtuaPin product/VPF content axis versus a VPCabs/VPDB content axis. Had to happen. Doesn’t hurt us. I don’t expect it to help much either. As long as there are open alternatives, it’s all good.

November 28, 2016 at 8:47 pm #42415I do think it would be pretty cool to be able to download new tables from within PinballX without having to visit one website for the table another for the rom and another backglass… if this site doesn’t offer that integration and doesn’t have any original content yet then I don’t see it working into my regular rotation. I do see how something like that would really take away from any sort of community. In general I’m mainly a lurker around the different forums but I think I’d still do that even if I could download new games right within PinballX.

November 28, 2016 at 9:30 pm #42419The chief complaint about VP from TPA users is difficulty of installation and maintenance. VPDB could be a move toward pulling in the more casual player. It could grow the community to include brand new users who require “double click to install” ease.
Beautiful as the VPDB interface is, I’m in this hobby for the community as much as the games. Connecting with developers and fellow enthusiasts never gets old.
While we’re on this subject: Thanks again randr for this amazing site.

November 28, 2016 at 10:03 pm #42420I just want to say that no other site is this friendly and open to conversation. Other sites seem to be threatened with the very mention of another site or forum. Yet, here we can talk openly about it as fellow enthusiasts with varying opinions. This is by far the best site for me. Thank you Randr. Not sure I will use this new site, because, I kinda like putting the pieces together and reading different opinions across the various forums to find those hidden gems (and stinkers) that are out there.
