  • Here is the rare and wonderful Star Light from Williams. The story goes that this was pulled from production when Space Shuttle, its sister game, appeared to be the stronger offering. Featuring a wonderful art package by Larry Blazek and Tom Schmelzer, great lighting effects, and a layout reminiscent of Laser Ball.

    ***During gameplay use the right magna-save button to change lit star lanes.

    This project happened primarily thanks to The Loafer's hard work. Last summer he arranged access to the only known System 9 version of this game with its generous owner, Honey Badger. In one harrowing evening he drove hundreds of miles to the location, took all the photos that served as source material for this build, and drove back just in time to go to work. Thanks, Rob!!!

    Thanks to 32assassin for the switch and lamp assignments.

    Thanks to the game testers.

    Thanks to anyone that I sniped scripting from with the biggest hat tip to rothbauerw and nfozzy for their physics work on previous projects.

    Requires 10.6 final

    1.0 initial upload was the bagatelle for April Fools Day

    1.0 actual Williams Star Light

      There is different sound mods for this table – “weird” and “firepower”. B-)

      Like all your previous work this looks and plays great.  I look forward to spending more time on it once I get back to working on my cab again.  Thanks again bord.

      A lot of beers, yelling and screaming but oh so satisfying..

      BTW, that dark magic when the playfield lights dim but everything is still somehow visible: wow-just-wow!

      Nice score, @mophead!

      The designers clearly went deep on creating a cool lighting package. I tried hard to emulate it for greatest impact. Glad you’re enjoying it.

      I just so love this table. And I agree fully with robertms on the lighting. This and Herweh’s Laser War is exceptionally good (yes, mod too) getting the atmosphere an fear in me for loosing the ball out of sight. There is another table on its way that gives me the same feeling … King Kong by @cyberpez (WIP – so wait for it). Oh – come to think of it – there is several more. Space Shuttle … etc.

      This to me is one of the top 5-10 best playing tables of all time. Everything feels great, so thanks you Bord/Roth. :good:

      Yes, it’s a fantastic table with great artwork and beautiful physics. This will be in my favourites list.

      I’ve made two wheels for this beauty as always. You find them in my MEGA-account or can download it from the popper media-database.

      I had the luxury of testing this near the end of the build phase and Bord had done another excellent job here.  This is such a unique table and I mean that in a good sense.

      Let’s get the obvious out of the way: There are many pins that don’t end up beyond the final testing phase and if I had to choose between this game and Space Shuttle, I totally get why Williams chose SS over this game.  But that doesn’t mean this pin isn’t well designed, and it certainly has some unique features and like any well designed game, the more you play it the more enjoyable it becomes.  My favorite features:

      • separate lane change button (might not be a must but it is unique and fun to use)
      • the two-ball multiball
      • the many different ways to trigger the extra ball
      • the SKILL required to get the X bonuses (it’s not just hitting the upper lanes like most pin of the era, you have to aim to different parts of the table
      • tracking the top 4 high scores, not just one high score!
      • the merging of the star rollovers with the dual lighted top lanes
      • the constellation progression (gives a feel of more modern “modes”)

      Probably most of you never had the opportunity to play this game in real life and now, with Bord at the top of his game, we all have a chance to partake in a rare gem that ends up being a really fun game, a worthwhile addition to all our VP collection.

      Thanks Bord and all authors/contributors who keep giving so much to our hobby. Also a special thanks to real pin owners like Honey Badger.  People like him and others on Pinside who’ve contributed play an important role that lead to tables released like this Star Light, and in turn make VPX into more than just a pinball simulator; it also allows each of us to travel through a virtual museum and enjoy gifts that could be lost forever.

      The story on how I got the pics? That’s still for another day ;)

      Well, I appreciate the acknowledgement and am beyond happy on how it turned out.  My role is still super small compared to what Bord/Roth and all those guys keep doing but glad to have contributed in my own way.  At least this time, it’s not just my good looks and charming personality that contributed heh

      So… I noticed that there is no dip switch settings presently on this table but I noticed the VP8 version does have one that pops up and there is an alternate, and very BAD, sound set to choose from.  Ugh, what were they thinking?  LOL Anyway is that what you were referring to?  Did you manage to incorporate the dipswitch settings into this version?

      Bord gave me a early version of it and he re-used dips from lost world or something. It ended up with some odd things, but, also made it possible to change the sound mode. So, what we need really is to find a good documentation for this one or ask @mfuegemann on how to hunt for dips in a proper way. I know that Destruk has a good writeup, but, it still doens’t take you through a way to get there without a manual. Or at least for me, it wasn’t clear.

      Yeah I had that one with the Lost World Dip.  Although it isn’t a proper dip, may be wise to use the one from VP8 for now but for sure, would be good to get the proper dip set up.

      Man between those cool 80’s Williams sounds and the superb graphics this one plays good too !

      Ofc never ever seen one in the wild, i don’t think those initial 100 or so ever made it over to Europe.

      Last of the system, and what a way to end that era. Thanks Bord, loaf and everyone involved, it’s one that made it

      instantly onto my favorit’s list.

      Thanks a million !

      Bord and Loafer,

      You guys have really achieved something special here. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous, as is the color palette. Nice hat tip to nfozzy and rothbauerw for physics. They’re really excellent! I don’t know how you guys managed to capture that early 80s, slower-tempo but still totally wild ball movement. The flippers feel just perfect, too. Wonderful sound package, as others have commented on. Thanks to 32A for lamp and switch support.

      I certainly don’t expect everyone to start supporting VR with every release. I’m VR only these days, as my son Bobby stole my playfield from my cab for his bedroom gaming rig as soon as he noticed I’m spending most of my VP time “in headset.”

      Raising the playfield insert lights to just one unit below the playfield brought the insert lighting into focus. Removing a few of the backboxglass layers revealed the backglass (which was formerly obscured by a blank white square in VR). Turning on the backbox primitive in the script shows an amazing looking backbox in VR!

      The only thing I couldn’t figure out last night was how to keep the backbox and backglass from being replaced by all white blanks after that amazing flasher sequence fires. Any ideas?

      Anyone is totally free to say, “You’re off topic! Leave those kinds of questions for the VPVR thread, dude!”

      :P

      Hey @benlogan2, glad you’re enjoying it. I tinkered a little bit with a full VR/FSS setup for this game but quickly realized without proper gear to test it I was putting a huge amount of time into something I’d never use. It is a nice feature, one that I have every confidence will reach maturity in VP11 or VPE or whatever comes next.

      The backbox swaps are scripted incorrectly (sorry). Swap the Flasher1 sub out with this (starts around line 340)

      Sub Flasher1 (Enabled)
      If Enabled Then
      Flasha.visible=1
      backbox.image = “backboxflash2”
      Else
      Flasha.visible=0
      if light018.state=0 then
      backbox.image = “backboxoff2”
      else
      backbox.image = “backboxon2”
      end if
      End If
      End Sub
