We had quite a few posts in the TAF thread and I saw this pop up in Pin Bot and Funhouse as well.  I thought I would make a topic for it to try to help people out.

The error pops up when you go to launch a table.

Compile Error: Unknown Error.  Sometimes a few of them.  Sometimes will end with Error:
Fatal Error: shader compilation failed! Unknown (0xffffffff: n/a) at c:\projects\vp10\renderdevice.cpp:802

After working with Toxie, he suggested I roll back my drivers and see if that helps.  It did,  I no longer get the errors.

I have an nVidia GTX 850M,  looking here:  https://www.nvidia.com/drivers/beta the oldest I could go back too was 416.81.  These worked for me.  Make sure you choose a ‘custom (advanced)’ and select to ‘perform a clean installation’.

      Hope this helps

Interesting. I have much older than that, 373.06
I’ve mentioned it before. I’ve been a bit surprised to see how little our community discusses driver versions.
Maybe time for a update for me ?

Thanks for the heads up @sliderpoint and @toxie

I get this error with an AMD card. I have also started noticing that it is most frequently with Bally Williams DMD games, Stern games seem to be less problematic. For example I can’t stop and restart a BW game without it crashing the majority of the time, but with Stern I can and even edit the table without it crashing.

Interresting! The only difference between BW and Stern when running a table is VPinmame (emulation), right? VPX doesen’t care about the brand, or does it?

                +1

Played TAF yesterday several times without any errors. Launched it from VPX directly and also through PinUp Popper. Today I can’t get it to launch through PinUP at all, just gives the compile error (nothing else). Launches ok from VPX directly.

About NVidia drivers, you can find all old versions here:
                https://www.guru3d.com/files-categories/videocards-nvidia-geforce-vista-%7c-7.html

I personally had really bad stutter with 416.xx version so reverted way older ones as this historic card quite likely doesn’t benefit from any recent updates. 10- or 20- series is different thing.
