And the freaky issues continue. <<<banging head>>>

I have been fighting an issue where PinballX no longer works correctly for me. It has massive pauses and stutters to the point that it is unusable. I decided to load the latest Nvidia 970GTX driver and ever since, I am getting “Display driver stopped responding” blah blah blah errors. I even reverted back to the code from the cards install disk and this issue remains.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled over and over even using multiple uninstall programs. I have changed the power for the card to maximum performance in the Nvidia properties. I have pretty much tried everything that I could find on the net pertaining to this condition. But its still kicking my ass.

I do have a 10 year old Dell MOBO and core2 CPU. But it used to work fine a month or two ago.

I really need to get this fixed and I feel the error and the PinballX issues might be related. All help very much appreciated.

      Thanks

@topocat: aren’t you talking about the old shark codec – that was replaced by lav ?

          @wrd1972
: You have a good backup of your tables etc ? IF so, you could try to do a “system restore”. Be aware. I’ve seen and experienced myself that doing this you risk loosing all the *.vpx files you’ve got since the previous restore point you are reverting to. Why M$ does this is kind of a mystery to me. They say about this feature that you should not loose your own files. What you are describing is very weird. I was about to suggest to run drive cleaner program, but, I see you’ve already tried that.

Correct. Maybe make sure they are not installed.

Yes I had the LAV filters installed. But for giggles, I did remove them to troubleshoot. Same thing.

It seems to me that the LAV filters are used for video playback when you are browsing tables. IMO, they dont play a role when you launch a table and play…could be wrong. Replaced the ATX power supply with a newer bigger one. No improvement.

Seems the bigger problem now is that damn notification just keeps popping up at random down in the taskbar even when launching the internet browser. Gonna update a backup system disk to W10 just to try that.

              Any other ideas?

Here are some links starting with latest driver for Nvidia 970gtx, and ending with oldest driver.

These are for WIN 10 64bit.

Maybe try the oldest and work your way up until it does what you want.

So I found I had the video card in the NON primary PCIE slot. Resolved that. I also added the TdrDelay registry hack and it appears at a glance, the driver crash message has stopped. Still too soon to call it and which of those MAY have helped.

So PinballX still has stutters and pauses and is unusable. I am using the setting that Draco has suggested. I did a clean install of PBX but the issue remains. If I could just find the fix to that. Pinball life would be awesome again.

I can try older W7 drivers but I am not optimistic. PBX way back worked with the original driver that came with the card. But just recently, PBX started these issues on that driver.  I also plan to re-install the older GTX 670 and see what that does maybe tomorrow.

                      Success.

I am 99.9% confident the PBX stuttering issue and display stopped responding error is now resolved. I am reluctant to call it totally resolved because Murphy will certainly bit me in the ass if I do. I ended up upgrading the entire disk from Windows 7, to Windows 10 and it just made all of the difference in the world. But still cant explain why PBX worked perfectly fine on W7 for the longest time.

I really want to thank everyone here for the assistance. Now I can focus more on making tables rather than working on the cab.

Yeah, I had the same problem with windows 8.1.  Everything was fine, then my cab came down with a case of the stutters when run form PinballX.

I tried almost everything I could think of, I was even looking at things at the VP source code level.   When I reached out to Tom he insisted I upgrade to Windows 10.  I didn’t want to do that, I swore it wouldn’t make a difference, but the stutters were COMPLETELY gone and never returned.  It was an in-place upgrade even, not a new install, so all the configs and software versions were the same.

It still bothers me to this day that I don’t know the real cause but am happy to have a stutter free cab again.
