I went to Chicago Street pinball with my brother today and spent some time playing their only EM (Big Ben). The place was pretty much empty so there wasn’t much background noise or distraction. I was struck by the fact that you could feel a slight vibration (especially in the lockdown bar) of the 120 Hz buzz (60 hz + to -) from the flipper coils when they were held down. I don’t remember actually feeling an actual EM table vibrate with the flippers depressed but maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention. The effect was really cool and would be nice to add as a DOF effect but only if this is common the AC flipper coil EM machines. Anyone with an EM or a lot experience with EM machines know if this is common or was it something that was peculiar to this particular Big Ben machine?

March 25, 2018 at 11:05 pm #80184Very common I think. My em Pinball’s you can feel every click and buzz for sure. Best way to simulate that though would be with ssf sounds put speaker right on lock at area. I wouldn’t want to run my solenoids like that :) but maybe someone has different way

March 26, 2018 at 11:39 am #80211I was thinking about some small discrete electronic device that could simulate the 120hz vibration. The effect is subtle, maybe something small mounted to the backside of the lockdown bar?

March 26, 2018 at 1:08 pm #80219I think the effect varies a lot depending on the condition of flippers. I had very noticeable buzz and vibration in my Golden Arrow before I did a flipper rebuild kit, and essentially none afterwards that I could tell. On my Vulcan I don’t ever recall having any, but it’s been gone a while.
What would be really cool is if you program in wear and tear, and after so many plays you start getting more noise and vibration, and have your rubbers get older and less bouncy, and the playfield get dirty and rough, and then have an option in the menus to do a flipper rebuild and clean and wax and new rubber rings… just a thought :)
