https://vpinball.com/VPBdownloads/hunter-jennings-1935/
I’m back with another bagatelle table from the 1930s. This time it’s Hunter made by O.D. Jennings & Company in 1935. I came across some YouTube videos of pre-war pinball tables awhile back and was amazed by the fast-paced evolution from the likes of Baffle Ball & Ballyhoo to the tables of the mid-to-late 1930s. Hunter is essentially the same game as Jennings’ Sportsman title, minus the slot machine style payout. I actually found more pictures of Sportsman than Hunter, but since I have yet to see anyone install a slot machine arm to the side of their visual pinball cabinet, I opted for Hunter. All version of Hunter also seem to have the backbox, so it gave me something to recreate for the backglass.
Once again, I have to give a big thank you to mfuegemann for creating Cavalcade. I actually started this table from the basically empty VPX starter table and built Hunter from as close to “the ground up” as I could do (hard to imagine improving on the groundwork done by the likes of JP and other VP legends that influence basically every functioning table). And while I completely redrew the playfield, utilized my limited Blender skills to make pegs, and managed to recreate the backglass, I still needed to borrow code from Cavalcade to get the game to function. (I did all the scoring/backglass code, though, so if that part doesn’t work, it’s on me).
It’s fun for me to try and make these old tables available for everyone to play so long after they first came out. And while I’ll spend much more time playing Medieval Madness or EM machines from the ‘60s or AC/DC or Gottlieb machines from the ‘90s, I do find myself coming back to these antique recreations from time to time.
Speaking of which – I’ll be going into hibernation now that this project is done. I’ll obviously be lurking around the forums and I’ll do my best to patch any issues that may be discovered. But I need to take some time to play all the awesome tables this community provides. I do have some ideas for potential future projects, but I won’t promise anything at the moment. So, until then, hope you enjoy!
**INCLUDED IN DOWNLOAD**
- Table (version 0.51)
- Direct B2S Backglass (note, this does not fill the full screen. That is by design. It’s much shorter than a modern backglass so I didn’t want to distort it to fill the space)
- Tarscisio Style Wheel (I invite you to make your own and share it if you don’t like mine. I just include it because it’s what I made and plan to use).
**INSTRUCTIONS**
- “1” (credit) key starts the game
- “Right Shift” (rightt flipper) key loads a ball into the shooter lane
- “Enter” (plunger) launches the ball into the playfield
- 10 balls per game (be sure to not let the ball *almost* get out of the shooter lane and then fall back down. The trigger that counts the number of balls per game is right below the gate and it counts every ball that rolls over – even if it fails to get out of the lane)
- “1” (credit) key resets the game once completed
- IF STUCK BALLS FALL IN AFTER YOU’VE RESET
- The Spacebar (or center nudge) can delete the now captured balls as long as you have not yet launched the first ball of the new game.
- You could also keep hitting the credit button, too, I guess?
- Scoring explained on apron. This game still needs you to put in a new credit to stat the game each time. On the real machine, you’d be putting in nickels, so I have you press a button to start each time.

December 12, 2020 at 1:24 pm #214562Thank you. I guess my comment from last release is still valid, not the table I will play every day. But, I should also add. I was a bit surprised too, spending more time playing it than I first expected. It was very well done, and the preview for this one looks very nice too. Currently consideringing putting those bagattele tables into their own category in the frontend. Enjoy explaining and showing friends where pinball actually started.

December 12, 2020 at 3:13 pm #214590Congratulations on the great work
I’m a fan of bagattelles
The only error I saw is that the backglass does not mark the score
I hope I see it STAT (a genius in b2s)
Go ahead with the retro
Congratulations again, and hopefully that bug can be fixed. You need to login in order to like this post: click here
December 12, 2020 at 4:15 pm #214621Sorry, guess I should’ve explained, @danazo – there’s no “score” on the backglass. The reels back there are to tell you if you’ve hit the skill shot and enough of the animals to win free plays. I should also mention that the table doesn’t keep track of how many free plays you’ve managed to rack up, since the real machine certainly didn’t do that, and you just won nickels or free play tokens to use, so you’d have to feed them in anyway.
Here’s a picture for a Duck/Squirrel payout as an example:

As a side note, I have managed to do get this specific payout ‘once’ while actually playing, but I cheated to get this screenshot. I’m curious to hear if anyone actually manages to trigger one of the higher reels while playing.

December 12, 2020 at 5:19 pm #214747These tables might not be something you play everyday, but I just love them for the historical value !!!

December 13, 2020 at 1:01 am #214812A very nice bagatelle. Thanks for that.
The wires at the entrance to the left squirrel are too close together. The ball cannot reach the hole. You need to login in order to like this post: click here

December 13, 2020 at 8:42 am #214862@giovanni1966 – thanks for the catch. I have now updated the table and that version can be downloaded. I tweaked that spot and a couple others that had issues, too. (The top pheasant and bottom rabbit had both of their wires lowered. Pheasant kept trapping balls if the 100 was filled. And it was impossible for ball to get into the Rabbit. I mention these in case someone would rather edit their table than download for a relatively quick fix. But like I said, version 0.51a should be up now as the download).
@johnbymy – Je ne parle français. However, Google Translate exists, so I think I understand your question. Short answer, no, that’s not normal. I can open the table directly. However, it does seem to take a bit longer than the average table to open. I think the file is quite big, so it has a lot to load. I’m not sure what you mean by saying “plante.” If VP crashes, I’m not sure what’s causing that. If it just seems to take longer than expected to load, everything is probably normal. Sorry if that’s not helpful. You need to login in order to like this post: click here
December 13, 2020 at 10:32 am #214882This table is great fun. Thank for building, love the Bagatelles!. One weird issue I’m having is that I can load the table if I get in Visual Pinball first (File, Open), though the table takes longer than it should to load, open’s fine. However if I just double click on the VPX file, or load from a front-end (like pinbally). It tries to load, then closes Visual Pinball. This is the only table this is happening to. If anyone has any clue what the issue is, I would love to hear it!

December 13, 2020 at 11:14 am #214885@jogrady7 – That sounds like the issue johnbymy is having. I’m not sure what the problem is, because it loads for me. Both through popper on the cabinet and by double clicking the file on my laptop (which isn’t a high performance machine by any means). Also, yeah, it does take longer to load than a lot of tables. The file is on the larger side. I even trimmed it down to get to this size – it was way worse before I reduced the resolution of the playfield and apron images.

December 13, 2020 at 5:19 pm #214948I have a strange issue, I can’t get this table to record via Pinup autorecord, this is the only table with this problem. Any help?

December 13, 2020 at 10:52 pm #214968Spent the night catching up on some tables and saved this for last. Another fascinating recreation! Noticed something. I have a wimpy system so learned a trick a while back (from a brief post that @stefanaustria made – thanks STAT!) that let me get some heavy games working. Open up image manager and look for HUGE files, export them, downscale, re-import. This table looks to have some large image files. Really large. I’m getting some stutter. Looking at the size of some of these files, systems more robust than mine might struggle. Would an update with smaller image files be possible?
Love how you have spent the time to bring never-before seen ‘pins’ to life! Looking forward to whatever project you tackle next.

December 14, 2020 at 1:13 pm #215044Bad News: My version 0.51a stopped working after I tried to put the file on a fitness program and get it to trim down. I kept having the same issues people were reporting all of a sudden.
Good News: I got a back-up of the file to cooperate and I have now uploaded the new, svelte, half-as-big file available for download!
I also removed the collision sound when the ball hits the bumper (that I barely noticed when playing anyway) and I think that helped cut the stutter. (That’s what I’ve convinced myself of, anyway. Your experience may vary). Still takes a good 30 seconds or so to open for me, but when I re-recorded the popper video, I set a new high score and got the Squirrel payout, so I don’t mind waiting and watching
. Thanks to @jfr1 for suggesting the image reduction – I had been worried about making the playfield blurry after spending all that time redrawing it, but I think it still looks nice.Other Good News: @impatientoverlord made a nice media package of DMD & Topper options for the table! Be sure to check it out so you don’t just have a blank DMD staring back at you
: https://vpinball.com/VPBdownloads/jennings-company-logohunter-logo/#bbpressHopefully this file gets things working for everyone. If not, I am officially out of ideas. Thanks for bearing through the rocky first few days, folks. I know, I know, it happens. Still frustrating to put something out and then have it not work for people. Fingers crossed that it’s better now.

December 14, 2020 at 1:54 pm #215046I believe the issue being that you are having too large images inside the table. Try to reduce the resolution, and dpi.
