Hot on the heels of my Virtual Topper project (see it HERE), I’m looking at adding a separate DMD screen to my cab.
At this stage I just want to test the waters, as I’m not convinced it will be worth the effort. Not only will it require a new top box, but it will also require a new computer, as currently I’m maxed out for video output (no room for additional GPUs and on-board cant be enabled).
So my plan is to use an iPad for the DMD for now. It should be easy, as the Duet Display App works beautifully to seamlessly extend the Windows desktop to the iPad and the iPad’s ‘Guided Access’ would allow Duet to maintain focus (even from sleep).
I have spare iPads and iPad minis laying around (my son runs a school’s Mac IT department), so hardware is not a problem.
Here is a quick mockup showing the screen size of the iPad Mini in relation to the 28 inch B2S…
Now that I have seen the mini in position, I’m starting to think that it’s slim size would make it an easy permanent install. I would only need to mod the existing topbox and not make a complete new one. What are your thoughts… Is the iPad mini too small?

September 7, 2016 at 11:21 pm #36135Rusty,
What kind of space do you have below you back box screen? To me it looks a little small but the Ironman DMD is split which makes that screen seem smaller than it is. Any chance of a real DMD fitting in there? Even like what randr did for his desktop dmd, then set it on top your playfield?

September 7, 2016 at 11:55 pm #36136I only have about 105-110 vertical height to play with. I cant really see through my speaker grill (which is full width), but I think I have about 150mm of width in there. So pretty small for a DMD I would imagine.
I have about 15mm of depth that I could buy myself out the front though…. If I were to replace the speaker grill (and the two bits of timber that it sits behind) with a full width solid panel (with holes for the speakers of course), I would gain another 20mm in height (as the panel could sit “in front” of the translite TV bottom bezel) and as much width as I want. So depending on the depth of the DMD, I could recess it into the panel from behind.
How deep are DMD screens?

September 8, 2016 at 12:54 am #36142Thanks. Those measurements look almost doable. I’ll have to have a closer look inside the topbox.
I just positioned a regular iPad there and the DMD size was pretty good. Sadly, I’d never make it fit though.
One of the things with my cab is that I can’t go down with the extra screen, as I positioned my play field up under the topbox like a real machines play field.

September 8, 2016 at 2:32 am #36147OMG I just love how easy Duet is… just plug it in and BOOM! extra screen. This is with the DMD actually working on an iPad Pro. It’s a great size DMD and I could never use the pro, but at least it’s proof of concept that an iPad can be used for a DMD.
