Yowza. That’s some serious carpentry going on. Any pics/vids of the nitty gritty to share?

July 4, 2020 at 10:46 pm #189955I spent the day working on the marquee/top of the cabinet today. I will trim the overlap off the 45 degree angle top sides once the glue is good and dry. I also mounted the led light tube for the marquee and test fitted the left joystick and cut some of the parts for the pedestal.

July 7, 2020 at 12:17 am #190156Yesterday I finished trimming the marquee box and fixing an error I made in cutting the side panels. The upper front section was too short on both sides so I spliced panels in to correct the error. Now the shape is correct.
Today I got the pedestal about 2/3 finished. I still need to add the angled box sections on the bottom sides. I also did a test fit of the upper cabinet on the pedestal to check the height… Good thing I did because I had to shorten the pedestal by four inches to get the height right for me. I trimmed the pedestal, put things back together and took some photos.

July 8, 2020 at 11:59 pm #190372I finished most of the construction work on the pedestal, framed up and installed the rear access panel and cut and installed the upper rear angled cabinet panel. Next up is trimming the top edge of the upper rear panel and then doing a whole friggin’ lot of sanding and some putty work in preparation for painting…

July 11, 2020 at 1:24 am #190806I continue sanding, and sanding, and filling… I also cut one of the two sheets of plexi for the marquee and built the mounts and installed them. The plexi looks yellow because of the plastic backing sheet. I finished construction work on the pedestal and will continue working to prep the whole thing for painting.

July 11, 2020 at 2:07 am #190807Appreciate you sharing these. It is really beginning to take its form and like with the pinball machine, I’m impressed. I would not be able – by a long stretch to build this. My 10 thumbs and all that. Keep those progress pictures coming.

July 11, 2020 at 3:00 am #190808Thanks Thalamus! This is definitely a challenging project but I am really enjoying the work. It is pretty gratifying to see your own work taking shape the way you envisioned it.

July 13, 2020 at 11:07 pm #191143This evening I came to realize just how bizarre a commitment you’ve made to this game. I can’t remember ever seeing the movie and figured this had been made into a production game. Atari had it close to release but bailed? Sorry if I missed any of that earlier in post. So this is a one-off, one of kind cab built to play just one game? Perfect. oh, love all the clamps!

July 14, 2020 at 4:04 am #191153Well, yes and no… There are a few other people who have built Starfighter cabinets. Also I am not building it just to play the one game. I have Big Box installed on the machine I will use with the cab and I have a ton of other arcade games installed on it. And I have a separate 2 player arcade control panel which I plan to set up so it can attach to the Starfighter cab when I want to use it. So I’ll be using it for all sorts of things…
Oh and the Atari thing… their game wasn’t even quite the same as the one from the film. And I think a large part of why it was cancelled was the amount of work it takes to build the cabinet.

July 18, 2020 at 11:46 pm #191736Sanding, sanding, sanding, filling, more sanding… And I finally got started on the paint work. I decided to paint the stripes and starfighter title on the sides rather than using decals. Once each surface is properly sanded I am painting it with about 6 coats of polyurethane and finish sanding it to 330 grit, then applying the paint.
I have the left upper cab all painted with the exception of a few touch-ups. Here are photos of some of the steps…
