Hi all, I hope I’m posting this in the right spot.

I’m brand new to this world (I just learned about virtual pinball 1 week ago), needless to say I have jumped in with both feet.  After spending the weekend watching lots of videos (thanks Terry Red, Major Frenchy and Nailbuster, along with many more for your great videos). I installed all the various software they recommend in my test bench, but I have a question for you all.

I am building a cabinet for my 84 year old mother for this Christmas, she still actively plays Pinball FX3 and is pretty good to boot.  Anyway, The plan is to only have Pinball FX3, and use their front end in cabinet mode.  I want to install a few Solenoids, Shaker, Nudge, Plunger and Surround Sound Feedback.  The plan is to use the Pinscape Lite board for all the brains.

My question is, What software do I absolutely need just to run Pinball FX3 in her system with those “toys”?  Seems like VPinball and Pinup Player shouldn’t be necessary but I really don’t have any experience with this.  In my mind I should only need DOF and DOF linx, and B2S for what I’m trying to build.  I’m sure I’m wrong about that so please any direction you can offer is most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help,

      -Mark

DOF was originally built for Visual Pinball and  more directly PINMAME.

FX3 does not use PINMAME,  so it does not support DOF.

if you want to run Solenoids or a  Shaker  with the Pinscape Light.  You need to install DOflinx (Not sure it supports SSF as this is all scripted on a per table basis)

you can read all about DOFlinx here  https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=35852

You can map the buttons of any generic USB controller  to Steam.

you will need to use 3rd party software in order to map the Analog inputs from your Pinscape to Steam so that they work in FX3.

The default controller for FX3 is a 360 controller or X-Input Controller.

The Pinscape controller is a D-Input Controller,  Steam will not map every thing correctly.

you can use DOFlinx or 360ce.exe  to map your buttons and analog inputs

Your Analog Nudge and your Plunger need to be mapped to the Analog Sticks of your controller

make sure you download version 3 if you want the 360ce to open and close when you open and close FX3

Thanks for the info! I assumed I needed DOF to use DOFLinx, is that not the case (are they completely independent programs)?  What about Pinup Player or B2S server?  Will I still need to install VPX if I don’t plan to use it as an emulator?

@srotten If you are just playing FX3 you do not need Pinup Player…B2s…any Visual Pinball (VP9, VPX)…or Future Pinball for that matter.  FX3 has the ability to display a backglass image and move the DMD around to a second or third display in cabinet mode.  There are a ton of tutorials and articles on how to do this.  Just Google “FX3 cabinet mode”.  You have to contact FX3 for a code to turn on cabinet mode.  They will want an image of your cab setup.

Did you look at the Arcade1Up pinball machines?  They have three prebuild FX3 machines.  I don’t know much about them but I saw some demo’s on YouTube.  The backglass is static and the machines have a limited amount of tables.  I don’t know if either is upgradable.  They do have some of the elements you are looking for.

@jino0372 Thanks for the tips, those Arcade1Ups are too small and we are actually building this for my 84 year old mother who still actively plays FX3.  We are going to make it a sit down version with the screen at about a 45 degree angle.  We are going to put Solenoids in it so I didn’t know if I needed B2S for those to work?  I know I need DOFR3 and DOFLINX, and a 360controller emulator for sure.

if you are building a multi screen cabinet you will also need

                DMDtext or  PupDMD

so that you can move your FX3  DMD  from the PF screen to a secondary monitor

                https://www.nailbuster.com/wikipinup/doku.php?id=pupdmd_fx3

You also don’t want a black Backglass monitor,   so you will need to display an image in the backglass while you play a game.

You can use the built in FX3 backglass support  to display an image.

                or

If you don’t want a static image you can use a Front End to display a video  like this.

                https://vpinball.com/VPBdownloads/fx3-aliens-vs-pinball-backglass-videos/

                or

if you want  to have some feed back backglass.   you can use Doflinx  to run the dB2s file

so that when you hit an object  while you play the game.  A light in the Backglass lights up
