Hey All – I have an older vpin I built a few years back, and I’m starting to go through the process of updating it to all the newer stuff out there. I wanted to setup PUP, but I’ve having issues. Hoping you guys could toss me some advice!

My setup is a 2 LCD with a real DMD (pindmd2), and I’ve been having some trouble getting it up and running. My plan was to turn the Backglass monitor into the one that plays the videos and such, but things are crashing.

I followed the detailed instructions and videos for setup and install, even trying a completely fresh install of everything from scratch (after backup), and the issue seems to be the same:

Once I launch a table, I get a standard windows message of VPX 10.6 crashing right after I see the image of the playfield appear on my display. The table never fully loads. If I use my old backed-up VPX install with B2S and everything, it all still loads fine.  It’s only when I try to use PUP Player with Freezy’s stuff that I have issues.  Wondering if maybe my setup is the problem, since I have 2 screens and a real DMD?  On one attempt, I was able to get the PUP Player to launch the backglass videos for TWD, but the table still crashed instantly.  Also, the real DMD never displays anything.

Advice welcome! Anyone else have this issue?

EDIT: I’ve noticed that whenever I replace the standard dmddevice.dll file that I previously had (pindmd2 dll file) with the Freezy one, that’s when I have issues.  If I swap the dmddevice.dll back to my old one, the table launches fine.  So I think it might be something to do with the Freezy stuff?

Did you edit dmdevice.ini after installing freezu 1.71 (x86 32bit) files? You need to edit that file for your DMD hardware and also to enable PuP.

Also, be sure to follow the install instructions on the pup wiki:

Hi TerryRed – Thank you for the reply! Yes, I followed the instructions and edited the dmdevice.ini  , so pinup is “true” .  I did notice that my existing DmdDevice.log.config file was slightly different than the cited example.  Mine had “*” where in the install notes is said it would be “” . I doubt that matters as long as my updated version per the install notes was correct, but I figured I would mention it.

It’s definitely driving me a bit crazy. As soon as I revert back to my old files, everything launches fine, but when I swap in the Freezy stuff, Windows crashes the table every time.

            dmddevice.dll

Check your set up in-case you have more somewhere, swap them all out but 1st make sure you move them to a different folder in case you have to go back

            See TerryRed next post

Did you enable your hardware dmd in dmddevice.ini?

              [pin2dmd]

              ; if false, doesn’t bother looking for a PIN2DMD
              enabled = true

Also, do you have any other copies of dmddevice.ini or dmddevice.dll anywhere else? If so, then remove them. You should only have them in your VPinMAME folder, and not any sub folders.

Also be sure that the freezy and pup files aren’t being blocked, as well as make sure your antivirus didn’t eat any of pup’s files when installing it. You should be seeing dmddevicePUP.dll, dmddevice.dll, and dmddevice.ini in your vpinmame folder.

You might be on the right track here.  I noticed that in the dmddevice.ini that ALL of the various DMD options were set to “true”.  I set them all to false except for pindmd2, which is the one that normally works for me before I made the PUP changes.  The table didn’t crash this time, which was a great start.  Now I seem to be having some issues with too many PUP windows being up unexpectedly, but I will mess around with that and see if I just need to reconfigure things.

I’m downloading the Tron PUP pack now, and will report back if it successfully loads, or crashes like the other pack I tried for TWD.

It looks like the crash when launching the tables is fixed now, so my next step is trying to figure out how to configure the screens properly. Not really in line with the subject of this thread, so I can start another if that’s better.  Here’s what I’m seeing though, for reference:

Installed the Tron PUP pack labeled (Under).  My setup is, as noted above, just two screens (Playfield and BG) and a real DMD. When I performed the initial .bat registration/config step mentioned in the Player install video, I disabled everything but the Backglass option initially.  I’m not sure if I should have Playfield enabled or not, could use some feedback on that.

Right now, when I launch Tron, I get the nice looking semi-animated backglass image. The game loads up fine, and my real DMD works.  None of the “clips” are being played on the backglass that I’ve noticed (attract, game over, etc.) so I’m not sure if that’s where they’re supposed to appear.  The display for target completion “TRON” and “ZUSE” (which is the Topper/Under?) will suddenly appear randomly when I hit the targets.  I have it disabled, and it’s “behind” the playfield, but it pops up whenever a target is hit and obscures the playfield area for a couple seconds anyway.

I know this is likely just a setup issue on my end, so I’m going to go watch the videos again, but I’m wondering why none of the BG videos seem to be playing.  I can take a video if it helps and post it as well.

Please let me know if I should start a different thread! Thanks!

Update: I was wrong, the crashing is not fixed.  It turns out the reason I wasn’t crashing is because I had swapped in my old dmddevice.dll and removed Freezys. Whenever I add Freezys dmddevice.dll, the table crashes on load.  Very strange.

I started over fresh yet again, and still the same issue. I’ve had some longer-term problems with a small number tables crashing on exit, but never at startup. Definitely frustrating, but I’ll stick with it. I appreciate the help so far everyone.
