This past week I spent some time working with MJR’s new frontend software called PinballY. I’m a huge fan of Mike’s work and use his Pinscape boards, PinAffinity and PinVol software in my cab.
PinballY has several things going for it and I think it would have saved me many hours of configuration time had this been available instead of PinballX when I first set up my cab. In PinballY all of your screens (playfield, backglass, DMD, topper and instruction cards) all start out on your desktop and you simply drag them to the appropriate monitor and PinballY assigns them to those locations automatically and can size them to full screen.
Adding games is easy in PinballY and PinballY can look into your PinballX folder tree and pull all of the data from there without you having to re-enter the information. You can leave the files in PinballX or pull them over to PinballY as you see fit. You can choose if the DMD or backglass images from PinballY are shown during VP game play. This is nice for those EM games and seven segment display tables that don’t have DMD’s in their B2S files so you always have graphics on your DMD.
PinballY can show both DMD videos, images and high scores for your games on the DMD while you are in game selection mode. PinballY uses fewer resources than PinballX, loads and quits faster than PinballX and loads VP just as fast. I also like that PinballY shows the wheel image on a black screen rather than the LOADING message so you have something to look at while games load.
I shot a video of PinballY showing how to set up a table.

February 13, 2019 at 3:09 pm #114086I agree. Been using PinballY as my frontend for the last 6 months and I’m really happy with it.

February 13, 2019 at 3:24 pm #114089I’ve been so busy restoring machines that I’ve not been paying much attention to what’s new in the world of VP so PinballY was a nice surprise for me!
I found that there is an issue with Visual Pinball X not respecting calls from outside programs to start the editor window in minimized mode. This is how PinballY prevents VPX from showing up while the table is loading. According to Mike this is a “Bug” in VPX so I needed to add
/minimized /play -“[TABLEPATH]\[TABLEFILE]”
to my parameters for VPX to fix this. Has this been an issue for you?
I also found a bug in PinVol in relation to PinballY that Mike fixed and issued a new version for yesterday.

February 13, 2019 at 3:50 pm #114091I might sound like I want to defend PBX. Not my intention. I just want to make it clear that it is also possible in PBX to show the DMD while you play an EM. Popper can do that as well. Just want to clarify that fact.

I have that problem, too. Good to know there is a solution. I play with a front end so infrequently that I just let it ride.

February 16, 2019 at 3:19 am #114317Nice this was posted ! I didn’t see it earlier…
Installing it was very easy, just had to rename a few PBX-media files.
PBY is very easy in use and adaptation.
Now playing around with 3 frontends :)

February 16, 2019 at 11:24 am #114371<p style=”text-align: right;”>Iv been wanting to check it out, with some good reviews i may just speed that project up. I had 80 tables loaded up with pbx but had to uninstall and start over because i lost the ability to use the pbx settings.</p>

February 16, 2019 at 3:30 pm #114402I think that PinballY would be easier to set up than PinballX as a first system just because of the way it handles screen set up. The first graphics card that I had would periodically reorder the screens in Windows and setting them up was a bear with PinballX.

February 16, 2019 at 3:41 pm #114415Again I come running sounding like a PBX defender :) PBX has actually improved quite a lot around the time popper started to arise. Coincidence ? I don’t don’t want to speculate. I see what you are saying though, and I don’t disagree. But, I have a feeling it has been a while since you upgraded PBX @scottacus

February 26, 2019 at 9:03 am #115535I’ve been working with PinballY for a couple of weeks now and I found a couple of minor bugs in the program that would have no effect on users except if you manipulate screen parameters. I use Kodi as a Pandora player jukebox and I have set up .bat files to clone screens so that the Milkdrop 2 visualizer effects get displayed on the playfield and backbox and then restore the original set up when Kodi is exited. Mike has addressed these issues and released a new version of PinballY on his site.

In all fairness…that’s a Windows bug that is a pain in general and it sucks….so I also remember having that issue with PBX numerous times. I won’t “blame” that on PBX though.
That said….Popper uses x / y coordinates, so that has never been a problem if it ever happens. I am assuming Y does as well.

February 26, 2019 at 9:40 pm #115596I gave PinballY a try. I like it a lot. I still prefer PinballX, for now.
Does PinballY have b2s support?

May 19, 2019 at 11:58 am #128857So did anyone get Mame to load properly through pinballY? I had the same issue as others where it loses focus when loading a game.
