I have been trolling around the Ali-type sites looking at RGB LED matrix panels. The P3 panels that are used in a PinDMD are not all that much money. The USB controllers for HUB panels are pretty cheap as well. I haven’t done a deep dive yet, but it seems like it might not be that difficult to create an open implementation real DMD panel that would work with DMDEXT…. Has anybody else looked into this yet?
I could imaging making a p5 panel for my next project.

June 29, 2018 at 11:29 am #90058i suppose you could I think I’ve seen a few diy real Vishay dmd plasma projects on you tube so I would assume the color option would be close to that but I don’t think any of that is open source.

June 29, 2018 at 11:37 am #90067I actually have a few P5 panels and a small Chinese controller, I am not sure what I can do with it…. On the other hand, couldn’t a Teensy be repurposed to do the same? I. bet it wouldn’t be very far to make that change…
Might have to pick up another teensy to play around with this…
Too many projects… too little time! hahahaha

June 29, 2018 at 4:47 pm #90093If you buy the STM32F407 discovery board (V3 shield) or a STM32F429 Nucleo-144 board (V4 shield), you can to wire it up directly to the P5 panel and use the PIN2DMD software ($10 donation). Pinout is on the PIN2DMD github site.
The PIN2DMD PCB board makes things easier but it is optional. I did this before I order a PIN2DMD shield
