April 23, 2020 at 7:23 am #174777Great stuff !
I think I have some more shapes, if you want I’ll send then for a possible future update
Tip: I use to add a black frame on them , this make a lot easier to shape the insert in vpx as the black dont take light

More shapes are always welcome!
I think it would be easier to maintain when you upload it yourself. If we put it here you will always need me to add more inserts. There is already a insert collection somewhere. Can’t remember who provided it. So just add another one!

April 24, 2020 at 12:39 am #174963I wish we had as much choice in table resources as in wheel images
So I second what schreibi34 said. Upload resources yourself and improve on them is highly appreciated !

December 20, 2020 at 10:10 am #216038These are fantastic!
I used these for my F-14 Tomcat PinEvent update a while back, and it looked great. That was using them as only a flat image light.
Now my current new table is Retroflair 2… and I needed to replace the insert images from the original playfield image. So I finally took the time to learn how to create “real” inserts on FP.
I did a mix between what Steve Paradis (@polygame ) did many years ago on FP and what @flupper / @bord and others have recently done on VP.
I learned how to create the mesh for the “hole” of the insert (using FP Model Editor is required to make it work) and then used a separate light object recessed within that insert hole. Using your really nicely rendered insert images, I created normal / bump maps for them which works really nicely with FP-BAM’s real dynamic lighting (it reflects and shines off the insert’s bumpy surfaces in real-time with the light colour, etc)
It turned out great. I’ve only got the rectangle inserts done so far… but you can see the difference compared to the flat pointer inserts and the original table image.
New version so far with only the rectangle inserts done…
…which replace the original table’s insert images…
Now I just need to create some nice decals to go on top which will really show off the 3d depth of the inserts.
So now of course I want to do this for ALL my inserts and of course do it on my F 14 Tomcat PinEvent and other tables too. On FP’s dynamic camera views and in FP VR this really looks stellar. The combination of these images and normal / bump mapping is a nice alternative to using a real mesh for the insert jewel in order the keep vertices down and fps high. (though your Blender inserts are also fantastic and will be VERY handy with VPE in the future)
Can’t wait to show these off in a video demo (when the new Tron mode is done).
Thanks again!

December 20, 2020 at 11:53 am #216050That looks awesome!
Are you planing on making sidwalls for the inserts up to the PF surface to hide the wood? Should work with a single colour like dark green, dark red aso. depending on the insert colour?
Glad you like it!

That’s the thing… I can either combine the entire hole and insert as a mesh (which is used as a “light” in FP) which makes the sidewalls match the light “colour”…
…or I can do like the pics above and use a separate mesh for the hole and a flat polygon “light” for the “jewel” insert which has no direct effect on the sidewalls, and allows me to raise and lower the insert at will and change colour…. glow radius as I want separately. I can change the texture for the hole sidewalls to whatever I want at anytime (during gameplay, etc). I used wood because I honestly don’t know how they “should” look.
I preferred the look of keeping the hole mesh and jewel flat polygon separate. I also purposely keep it a bit recessed to make it look a bit more 3D once the decals go on overtop. How much may change. Still not decided. From a gameplay view it doesn’t look as recessed as much.
This table won’t be “realistic” so to speak (think along the lines of FX3 type stuff with things moving across the playfield, etc). So I “might” end up having these inserts move up and down to reveal a target / character of some sort (think the trolls on MM) in the future… or for “effects” during certain game modes.
