Finished up the cabinet and backbox wiring, need to staple a note in the head that the wiring harness is from Ice Fever and the colors are NOT all the same as in Alien Star, although most are. I pulled the stuff for the goal light and backbox puck animation from the wiring harness, but left some of stuff for the speech board that AS doesn’t have do to some of it being shared with the regular sound card wires. Other things I left in place but am not using like the slam tilt switch on the coin door and the ball rolling tilt mech that usually sits near the tilt bob.
Since that finishes up the cabinet other than dropping in the playfield I moved it out of the work room and into the living room next to TNA. This is a test arrangement of the room as we had to rearrange in order to be able to pull the glass from both AS and TNA (just in case anyone wonders about the pictures hanging on the wall behind the backboxes).

January 4, 2020 at 5:21 pm #157005That’s a sharp looking solution and clever, too.
Bugs Bunny would be proud. He could outsmart any problem.

January 11, 2020 at 3:40 pm #157940so, let’s see where we are… a little bit of sanding

a little bit of polishing, not going for super glossy.

a little bit of cleanup (still lots to do after clear/sand/polish events) and a little bit of scanning (vp table update coming.. sometime)

and moved into the bonus/entry/pinball work room in the house so i don’t have to keep the shop heated (winter is coming). mounted the side rails to keep is straight and put on the rotisserie. time to take apart mechs and clean/fix them, replace stuff that is missing (TNT used for parts), clean up some electrical and re-populate everything eventually. still lots to do. VP cab in the background is currently serving as parts and tool holder.

January 13, 2020 at 6:46 pm #158508So it’s all the little things that seem to just suck up the time. Alien Star has I believe 16 ground returns from the playfield that hook to a nice spade terminal block on the transformer panel. The panel being metal is the main ground. Anyway, whoever removed the playfield from the cabinet many years ago evidently didn’t know that you could just pull the female connector off of the male portion of the terminal block.. until he got to the last one and it evidently came off and he had one of those “doh” moments. Either that or he decided after pulling the first one off that it was easier to cut the rest, we’ll never know, but in either case I needed to add 15 female 1/4″ (or 6.3mm for you other folk) spade terminals back to the end of cut wires (I’ve seen a video where Mr. Tuckey uses a big wire nut and just a few connectors
). Of course when I went to my trusty supply of terminals, I only had 6 of the correct size.
So another order, another wait, oh well plenty to do, today was delivery day so I quickly finished this task off.one of these things is not like the others….

OK, I did go back and cut off the remaining old one and put a new one on, my ocd would not let me do otherwise.

January 14, 2020 at 6:35 pm #158646Another snowy day here in the Seattle area, with many schools canceled for the day, including mine. On the plus side I get to work on and play pinball.
Mostly going through the bottom side of the playfield, cleaning, repairing, replacing. today I put new faces on the round targets and cleaned and adjusted the switches for them. went through the slingshot mechanisms, replaced coil sleeves (doing on all coils just as a matter of course), installed, adjusting will come after the top side and rubbers are installed. got the 3 pop bumpers back installed, cleaned, replaced, blah blah, soldered in new lamp sockets in them, should be good to go. did put the trough assembly stuff on the top side, mostly just to get it out of the way.
pic of the day:

January 15, 2020 at 5:26 pm #158733Another F#$king snow day here, so more pinball work and play. today I got the coil I needed for the lock kicker, so installed that and wired it all up (after having someone who can see colors tell me which wires were blue and which were purple). then I moved on to the light sockets. The playfield had been stacked on a shelf and many of the tabs were bent and things were shorting out, so that was the first order of business. While doing that I found a few that were obviously broken and not going to work so I replaced those with spares I had. Then pulled all the old incandescent bulbs out of all the insert lighting, most of the GI were out before clearing as they stick up through the playfield. I counted 48 bulbs under the playfield. I then cleaned each socket, installed a nice Comet 1 SMD warm white LED and tested that it worked with just a little wall wart I added alligator clips to. Found a couple more sockets I needed to replace during that process.
After I got all the insert lighting verified, I flipped it over and installed all the GI bulbs after cleaning those sockets. None of those sockets needed to be replaced fortunately as I’m out of the right spare for those. Only 25 bulbs on the topside counting the 3 pops. Enough blathering, time for pictures!

The GI all lit up, ain’t that a treat. The above playfield GI are currently all 2SMD Comet Sunlight Led bulbs, a little more neutral hue than the warm white. Since I could only test the inserts one at a time I did not get any pics of those.
And now for a special feature, Beer of the Day! This one seemed appropriate and hopefully you all get the reference or I will have more dissappointment as I did with my better half (not surprised as she hasn’t seen the movie) and the checkout person at the store who was also clueless although he did fess up he had seen the movie and “got it” once I pointed it out to him. Hope I didn’t spoil it with the movie references
Review later when it gets past beer thirty on the west coast.

January 15, 2020 at 9:52 pm #158750Had some dinner, had some beer, and decided to do one of the brave steps. took out my trusty multi-meter, found out it was no longer trusty after 20+ years the selection switch would not hold steady, so fortunately I had a spare and plugged in the cabinet to power, with only the plugs to the transformer board plugged in. Tested the voltages and everything seemed OK, so powered off, plugged in the cables to the head/brain and displays, crossed my fingers and toes, and flipped the switch! To my delight everything came up, displays came on, it’s alive!!!
no playfield in it, so really can’t test a lot of stuff, but have the pascal all-in-one system 80 board configured, ran through the sound tests to hear all the sweet alien star sounds, and it was good!

I am getting a fair amount of light bleed around the score and credit displays so need to do some sort of shield there, but other than that I’m a happy camper. game over, tilt, shoot again and high score to date lights are not showing as they are actually fed from the playfield harness, don’t ask me why, no idea, but I do need to make light shields for those as well to go between them.

January 17, 2020 at 11:32 am #158963OK guys, time for a survey! (can I add a Poll to this???)
yesterday started in on the topside with shiny bits and bobs. needed to tee nut about 10 of the posts so that took a bit of time, yes I could have filled and re-drilled and used regular wood screw posts, but I figure there is a reason that those posts were loose, and looking at where they were it made sense as all were high impact areas so I figure spend the time now while it’s on the rotisserie and bullet proof it.
for fun this morning I slapped the plastics on temporarily and hooked up my GI test power and and tested out the different sets of lane guides I have.
Stock color, red:

Some yellow:

And the all white look:

I would have liked to try orange as well, but I could not find them all in that color, just the little tent guides.
I’m leaning for a particular one, and my better half has a favorite as well, but what do you all think???? Oh, I should mention that at the moment I’m going with clear silicone rubbers on here, undecided on flipper colors yet (have white, black, red and orange in house), but also have enough white rubbers on hand to swap it all out if I decide I don’t like the clear.
Yes it’s getting close, and I’m getting excited, unfortunately found out after my last order that one of my flipper coils is FUBAR so I had to make another order so can’t do the flipper rebuild yet. I got most of the rubbers put on after these pics as well, and will need to adjust the slingshot switches, but everything else is looking good. I even got the spinner in and adjusted so it should rip nicely as well, much needed on this machine.
