I recently discovered that my VPINMAME rom zip files , does not contain always all the files that should be in the rom.
Some .bin files (or other extensions) are removed that could be for example sound files

For example table ‘Contact (Williams 1978)’ where rom cntct_l1.zip is used.
According to vpinmame, the sound file is missing :
      vpinmame

As the state noticed : ”If sound roms are missing, sound will be disabled’
The game is playing fine, but I miss some sounds (properly)
Rights now, all the new roms I add, I check with Vpinmame and check if all files are available. If not, I try to search the internet and add it to the  zip.
This fixed for me a couple of times the rom.

But I want to check all my roms if I miss 1 or more files in it.
Now I tried to use Rom Center 3.7.1, that can read all the roms that are supported in Vpinmame and can check them
      For this specific  rom :

      RomCenter

So it noticed that the file is missing, but that in the zip file there is another file (with different CRC/SHA1) that is not needed.
But this tool shows a lot of “Not needed in this file”. Although I have unchecked “Remove useless files”, it deletes the files that are not needed when fixing the game. (and not sure if this is needed in the future)

I also tried to use CLRmamePro to identify roms with missing files, but cannot find an option to check the roms itself if all content is there.

To make a long story short : Who knows how to identify roms that are missing files in it, and what is the best and quickest way to fix this ?

clear your Recycle bin and fix your roms

when Romcenter deletes all your “Unneeded files”  it will send them to the recycle bin  —> simply move all the files in the recycle bin to an “Unneeded” backup folder

you should also go in the preferences and disable “Fix Samples”  as romcenter will want to put the samples

in your rom zip files.  (or do what I did and add a samples folder to your rom paths

        Capture

I have my roms backed up in 3 sub folders

        roms  (all pre SAM roms)

        re skinned roms

        SAM

        SAM patched

I manually fix the roms in the

re skinned roms and SAM patched folder because if I right click and click fix it will delete all the patched roms as the CRC will never match the PINMAME database.

same for the re skinned tables,   Romcenter will try to rebuild them as the original rom

turn the Tom and Jerry  rom into   Hollywood Heat.

I would use Romcenter to rebuild the roms as you might have roms  built for older versions of PINMAME  (You clearly do)

but if you are not comfortable doing this

just use it to identify the zip files that are missing bin files.

        red = missing bin files

        gray = unknown files

yellow = all the bins files are present but name is incorrect or can be rebuilt using bin files from other roms

        green = 100% accurate

If I was to start downloading roms I would start with the red roms.   But for me this are mostly Stern SAM Patched roms.

the CRC check is not going to pass they will always appear to have missing bin files so I don’t need to download any files.

the only rom I need to re download is dm_h6c.zip  but its a clone of Demolition Man;  a rom I don’t use so who cares.

          Thanks @32assassin.
I also have multiple copies of the rom folders already.
I will give it a try and try to fix all roms.
For me the missing files I only want to fix. That there are multiple files, I don’t care, but it is maybe better to fix them as well.
Never realized this when starting with visual pinball !

And I’ve said countless times. Use VPU to download your roms from and when you do. Be aware that that site uses split sets, so you want the “mother” rom as well.

I use VPU mostly to download the roms, but think because of I download only the split rom , because I was not aware that that they where incomplete.

After a couple of years, still learning.

So, best way is just like mame has ? Just to have all the roms in the roms folder, so that split roms are working correctly ?

actually  if you are using split sets (witch you should!!!!!!)

you need to make sure you have the parent rom –>  rom center will give you a list of all the parent roms

expand this and make sure they are all green

                      Capture

If for some reason you feel like running a clone rom instead of the parent

The parent rom will contain all the “missing”  bin files from the Clone  zip file.

I fix my roms when a new version of PINMAME comes out and again

My only missing parents are my SAM roms (  but I’m using the patched roms so I actually have them)

I’m missing allot of Clones but since I don’t use them I don’t need to worry about them

And I thought for years it was easy: Download the VPX and backglass, download the rom and run the table, but still need to check all  B-)
                        Just kidding.

                        Thanks for the feedback.
I’m getting closer now to what I try to accomplish.
I made a new directory and copy all the roms I collected in the last years .
I run RC on it and I fixed all the “yellow” that has too many files, or files where it is an wrong naming case (don’t think that caused an issue, but fixed them)
The sound files that are missing are still yellow, but thought I could ignore those

So under ‘originals I have now 58 roms left that in red that are missing .bin and .snd files (not the sound files itself). I didn’t checked my my patched sammy files yet (need to figure out, what roms those where before copying all to my original roms location)

I’m in progress now to fix all the missing  files in the ‘originals’ from the datafile.
Will take some time, but I get there.

Thanks again guys and sorry for these noob questions I asked.

Ain’t a noob question. People who can’t understand why their tables ain’t working are the noobs. Took me a while to understand how clrmamepro works. Fortunately I had backup of my roms first time I ran the program ;)
