With the sunset of VPX on the distant horizon (honestly, 10.6 is as complete a package as we need w/o a new graphic engine), it is time to start looking to the future. For me that means tidying up your room before you go. I’d like to get my favorite personal projects in optimal shape while also closing the door on their further development for VPX. Following is a to-do list of updates that I’d like to complete in the following months with an eye to leaving these projects in the best (reasonable) shape possible. All except those listed “dead” may be revisited in whatever platform comes next (VPE, VP11, whatever) but won’t be updated for VPX.
Why post this publicly? Because for me publicly saying I’ll do something keeps me motivated and updating tables is generally not as thrilling as starting new projects.
I’m not entirely done with VPX projects, but I don’t want to have a trail of projects that I’m not happy with nagging me either. My current VPX build process is about as effective as I want to get on this platform. New energy needs to go into improving Blender and Unity skills instead of finding new ways to light with 2D discs. So here we go:
Full VPX refresh:
Viking (almost complete)done
- Nine Ball
- Frontier
- Spanish Eyes* – new 4k pf redraw
Bobby Orr Power Play *new PF available
VPX physics-only update:
Comet (rubbers done, needs flippers)- Centaur
- EBD
- Black Knight* – new playfield available
- Cross Town
- Time Tunnel – new playfield available
Space TimeParagon
Retired (won’t revisit in VPX):
- Dracula* – new plastics available
- Flight 2000* – new plastics available
- Magic Circle*
- Space Shuttle
- Stingray
- Genie
- Lost World
- Galaxy
- Centigrade 37
- Seawitch
- PinBot
- Star-Jet
- Star Light
- Cap’t Card
Dead (won’t revisit)
- QBert
- Pink Panther
- Sure Shot
- Goin’ Nuts
- Air Aces
- Time Warp
- JackBot* – physics could be copied from Pinbot
I really love a lot of these games. Would make a killer home collection, no?

August 27, 2020 at 5:42 pm #198175Yeah, tough for me to know where to draw the line between VPX and the next thing. Lots of projects I’d like to do yet but figured cleaning up old work would be the best way to eventually have the freedom to throw the switch. Still really excited about the future of virtual pinball.

August 27, 2020 at 6:31 pm #198180I’m very curious to see how you can possibly top the work you are currently doing. This list of tables would be enough to keep me content on my cab indefinitely. Except for Cross Town and Star Jet…I can’t get the ball to load ;)
Thanks for making this vp journey so amazing bord. These tables ARE my home collection.

As someone who could never truly work my way through all of VPXs nuances and figure out how to do what you have seemingly mastered, I’ll definitely be looking foward to see what comes next!

And for the name of the next VP Versio… I say it is reboot time. Just call it Visual Pinball

August 28, 2020 at 4:12 am #198239I too am anticipating the day we can all embrace VPE. Progress is great…but there is still more to do so a long wait still until we are at the point of complete tables and authoring. It will be fantastic when it happens.
If I wasn’t having so much fun making animated characters dancing on pinball tables… or messing with realtime spotlights…. or making crazy space battles… I’d be right there with you, spending more time messing with Unity and Blender.
I think everyone understand where you are coming from…and announcing this and seeing that list just makes us appreciate what you do that much more.

August 28, 2020 at 4:39 am #198251I’ve kind of waited for a post like this from you. Comments in beta thread and pictures with lists of strike-through tables and tasks. I do very well understand why, after you sharing the Seawitch project. There is so many things you do in blender to overcome old directx limitations, and it can’t be fun doing them over and over. I’m very grateful for all the great tables you’ve created for us, and I’m happy to see that you ain’t leaving, just cleaning up and getting ready for whatever comes next. If you get bored at that, Meteor, is a table I’ve always expected to see from you one day down the line.
I agree with you. There are many things that could be improved upon with VP. Personally, I’m more of a player than a graphic artist, so, physics is higher up on the wish list. The most important part in a pinball machine is the flippers and we can’t fix those completely without bumping VP to the next version. Scripting solution seems to have different effect from machine to machine unfortunately. Next, yes, lighting is very important. You should get exited when a mb is running, and, even though some guys have managed that on vpx, it could have been so much better with better native lighting.
More layers in 10.7 is great, And I can’t thank the devs enough for what they do, constantly trying to add features and please us for free. Those guys are super stars. But, a major bump, breaking vpx compatibility would be welcomed by me too. What I’m fearing though, is that we would need more core devs around to make it happen. It is not a small task.

August 28, 2020 at 5:28 am #198252It’s not like compatibility hasn’t been broken with each new version of VP as it is anyways.
Converting tables from VP9 to VPX required significant work …and there was never complete backwards compatibility.
So taking the step to a complete new editor and engine, is a not just a logical next step…but in many ways a huge leap.
This would allow guys like Bord not just to have a faster / better / more enjoyable work flow… but their work can shine in the way it was meant to. Comparable to what they are able to show off in Blender….only now the workarounds needed for VPX’s static lighting is not required (something similar I’ve been very much enjoying with the new stuff I’ve been playing with lately).
As others have said… it’s not like you haven’t left everyone with friggin’ amazing VPX tables to play with. Do what you enjoy…and when the time is right, your new work will be better than we ever imagined.

I really believe that 10.7 should be the the final VPX version. Makes no sense for the devs to work hundrets of hours on bugfixing a VPX8 version that only offers a few extra UI gimmicks. 10.7 is great! Toxie and fuzzel should be able to take a break if needed and hop on the VPE train when the batteries are filled up again!

August 28, 2020 at 9:11 am #198275Great discussion. Also, lots of very kind words here; thanks – although totally unnecessary. Looking at the list of games I’ve worked on should make it clear I’m just following my fancy. Most fun thing in this hobby for me has been learning from and collaborating with others.I’m very curious to see how you can possibly top the work you are currently doing.
Me, too. That will be the challenge. In some ways not pre-rendering all textures presents some setbacks as far as visuals, even in Unity, but the improved build process will leave time/energy for figuring out the best ways to do it in an ultimately more dynamic toolbox. Already in VPE I can work on a Blender file and the changes immediately appear in my Unity project. Mind blowing.
As someone who could never truly work my way through all of VPXs nuances
RIGHT?! Seriously, having you and your skillset in the community is awesome.
Progress is great…but there is still more to do so a long wait still until we are at the point of complete tables and authoring.
Agreed. And this list will keep me going for a long time. Also lots of EMs I’d still like to do in VPX but some of the more modern games will sit on ice for a bit. I love that you follow what is exciting to you, Terry. If it is animated characters on a game or giant space battles, more power to you.
And I can’t thank the devs enough for what they do, constantly trying to add features and please us for free. Those guys are super stars.
No doubt. Not slagging them at all. I can’t do it, wouldn’t want to do it. Their work is awesome. For me their advances in 10.6 extended my attention span for VP by a couple years. Mesh playfields were a true gift.
And I agree, Meteor would be a good project. Would love to do the entire Steve Kirk trilogy. All masterpieces.
to make the creator’s life easier.
I love this.

August 28, 2020 at 9:22 am #198280@bord remember when we discussed using separate colliders for rubbers and how we could import them easily? I’ve described an approach here if you want to have a look. Lemme know if it’s clear and if it makes sense.
