I really like PuP and thinking of replacing PinballX with it.. BUT there is one disappointment.
For people with REAL DMDs the only support for playback is via animated GIFs at 10fps. I have some nice .avi animations that are 30fps and playback nice and crisp directly from PinballX. For PuP I used ffmpeg to convert them to 10fps animated .gifs. When viewing on the PC they look ok, but when I play them back on PuP they are definitely not as sharp and have artifacts showing. I used the script I found posted by Nailbuster and also used my own scripts and had the same results. :(
Is there a chance we can have native .avi/video support for real DMDs? It should be possible as PinballX is cabaple of this.

August 31, 2018 at 9:15 am #96880How did you get your videos to play in pinballx on a REAL DMD?
The only thing it will play for me is the default – no DMD video

I have DMDExt (https://github.com/freezy/dmd-extensions) set up. I believe PinballX uses that .

September 2, 2018 at 3:24 pm #97044Might be codec problem as well. The videos I made is known to work – so, you can download them to verify. If they work – you know others should as well.

September 12, 2018 at 8:46 pm #98075Just putting this thread back on track.. , Is there a chance we can have native .avi/video support in PinUP Popper for real DMDs. It should be possible as PBXis capable of this, meanwhile PuP only has 10fps GIF support.
thank you

if you’re PC is capable you can use 20 fps gifs. Jens use to use pin2dmd and his animated gifs were pretty good. I don’t see this changing soon… real-dmd drivers are just not that ‘stable’ for full avi playing.

I chatted to Jens about this last week. Here is a comparison of GIFs I converted using the ffmpeg scripts – https://uploadfiles.io/92wxq You will see that the resulting GIF files are dithered. There are artifacts in the letters ACDC and These show up on the DMD and look bad. I was looking at extracting out a palette to use in the ffmpeg and trying to make a cleaner conversion from .avi /.mp4 to .gif . I did some poking around and I think I have a BETTER script for converting video files to GIF. I am currently doing some tests but so far the results have been better… https://ufile.io/92wxq
So, not as straight forward, and kind of a pain, but I guess there is a workaround . Maybe because a lot of people use LCD screens now so this hasn’t come up with others

September 13, 2018 at 8:44 am #98086It has come up for me as well. When you get it figured out, please let us know what you find so we can do it as well… The dithering makes things horrible.

September 13, 2018 at 10:37 am #98093BTW i should also say that the DMD interface is via pupscript (not-integrated inside Popper code). Reason/Advantage to this is that is if another dev wants to change or write a driver for any device (with mp4 support), it would just require them to create an active/com object and support a few calls. (see pup script file for the simple dmd calls)
so current and any future devices can be supported in an open fashion without Popper changes.
