Hi guys,
I’ve asked this on the AMH support thread, as AMH is one of the tables I have this issue with, but I fear it may go largely unseen there…. and since it is kind of a general question, I hope it’s OK to ask again here, in the hope of reaching a larger brains trust.
mp3 music files live in the /Music folder and are not treated is the same way as the .wav sounds by the Sound Manager. This means I lack the ability to toggle the mp3 between VPX’s audio output devices.
So the question is: How does VPX determine which audio device to play these files through and can I intervene to send the music the sound device of my choice?

November 22, 2016 at 7:43 am #41706Yes I believe you use bgout_xxx.mp3 and change in script to have sounds play on secondary sound. Arngrim had modded it I thought so maybe you don’t have proper version?

Thanks TC, yeah I’ve been looking at the script and can’t recognise any code that would give me the option to change the sound device…. and sadly, if it needs to be added I have no idea of what to put in there. :(
It wouldn’t be something as simple as a naming convention would it? ie the script somewhere somehow sees bgout_ and directs it to bg? Easy enough to test I guess…. TO THE PINCAB ROBIN!

November 22, 2016 at 5:01 pm #41735“playmusic” goes to one choice, “playsound” goes to another choice. Both are defined in the vp preferences sound options.
bg_ will trick the player into playing it onto the other channel.
Or something like that

November 22, 2016 at 6:16 pm #41742I’ve tried renaming the files and the file names within the script (dropping the bgout_) and that had no effect.
I’ve tried changing playmusic to playsound but that won’t play the mp3 file.
In the script there is a line commented out above the working line…
‘ playMusic “M”, 2
musicplayer “bgout_M2.mps”I have changed that to use the upper line…
playMusic “bgout_M2.mp3”, 2
‘musicplayer “bgout_M2.mp”and it too plays the file to the wrong audio output. I don’t know what the , 2 is doing so I have experimented with 0 and 1. 0 gave no sound while 1 was unchanged? Perhaps the 2 represents repeats or something… whatever it is it’s not a device number.

Yes but as bgout_ they were going to the wrong place.
I’ve solved the issue now. Nothing needed to change in the table script, it’s just the VP Sound prefs cant be set so that Music plays to the secondary sound device if mp3s files are being used.
If mp3 music is involved in a table, then music must go to the default device.
Non-mp3 tables you can chose whichever sound device you want for music & mechanicals, as sounds managed within VP SoundManager know where to go, but I can only imagine that when mp3 files are being used, then something like Bass.dll is involved and it only sees whatever is set to the default device in Windows.
I was running them the way I was running them, as the primary’s sound levels are a little higher than my secondary’s and I liked that little extra for my Poor Mans’ DOF.
