***Special thanks to Kees for the original table and Loserman for the B2S mod and backglass!***
I was very lucky to be able to work with Hauntfreaks for this Smart Set makeover. This is my first contribution to a VPX (VP in general) table. This was also my first attempt at a redraw for anything at all (so go easy on me).
Hauntfreaks makes anything he touches look better and he did most of the work… lol.
I have included, for your convenience, an improved backglass, wheel logo, basic instruction card, and backglass still image with this package.
My tables are all set to portrait orientation. If you are like most normal people and want to change this to 270 orientation, I have included a POV backup file for your convenience. Simply go to the file > import > backdrop pov in the editor and import the Smart Set 270.xml file. The settings will be automatically applied for you. Fine tuning can be done in the “camera-lights mode” under the table menu in the editor.
A note on the “down and up post” position for anyone who played the original table. We found that screenshots existed with these posts in reversed positions. Based on the information in IPDB we found that most production models, except for some late production, matched the orientation we are using in this table, and that this is supported by the game manual, according to IPDB, so this is why we chose to do this. It makes more sense as the “up post” is the more difficult shot and the “down post” is a hazard near the kickers.
For my part, additional mods are allowed without approval and encouraged. However, Kees and Loserman have requested that you seek approval before modding, so please check with them.
Please enjoy this table. We will try to address any issues that arise through updates.
Drybonz – Playfield redraw, minor lighting changes, wheel logo, backglass cleanup
Hauntfreaks – Plastics redraw, kickers and other primitives, lighting and shadows changes, backglass cleanup
Kees – Original VPX Smart Set table
Loserman – B2S code based on Kees table, backglass

September 2, 2016 at 9:59 am #35755I want guys to know, this is Drybonz first attempt at a redraw, not only his first PF redraw, but also he had NEVER used Illustrator before… this is a VERY commendable feat…. I also want to point out the he and I are 90 degrees of how we work, meaning he’s a portrait guy and i’m a landscaper…. but he added the XML file so anyone can use the file without any backdrop trial and error… this is something i never thought to do, but will be from now on… I hope my comrades like BorgDog will also get on this bandwagon…. anyway… this is one hell a table straight out of the gate…. awesome job Bonz

what? just use his xml file, that will get any of my tables close enough, want me to do extra work?.. bah If everyone would just get on the bandwagon of setting their cabs up correctly those of us doing it the right way (bonz, slider and me) wouldn’t haven’t to accommodate all you folk and answer your silly questions. As an added benefit you could save the crick in your neck when working on your cab
Nice work Bonz (or do you go by Dry?), I know the learning curve on illustrator is pretty tough did my first illustrator work a short while back for Double-Up.

Ah… good question, BD… this is a carry-over from when I was using Kees’ original table. It was designed without B2S for desktop only, so if you ran the table in fullscreen cab mode there was a bunch of stuff all over the playfield. I moved it so that I wouldn’t see it while I was playing the table, and because I don’t use desktop at all, I simply forgot all about it!
Sorry about that… I will try to re-position that stuff at some point.

September 2, 2016 at 10:53 pm #35812Those outlanes are like a gaping maw… and they can make you crazy. What I like about it is that this table is really good training for soft stopping the ball. If you do the “hard trap” that you are instinctively used to doing, the ball is popping straight up into that devil’s cauldron they call an outlane. So, you are forced to to soft stop the ball with good flipper action and timing so that it doesn’t bounce up there.
The positioning of the “up post”, right next to the outlanes, and requiring you to shoot very late off the flipper is also a mean trick they came up with to scare little children, no doubt… but once you get that ball saver post up it gets really fun.
…and then there is the “down post”, placed right next to the lucrative side kickers… basically a hazard to make you lose your ball saver post.
I think it’s a deceptively tricky table, but I kind of started loving it as I was play testing. One strategy is to get good at throwing the ball up the middle to the top kicker area. It gives you a chance to hit the kicker so you can light up all the palm tree arrows for more points, and also to get your “a and b” lanes both lit, so that you get the most points out of your bumper bounces and also activate the ball saver gate on the right side outlane.
I’m not very good at it, but those are my thoughts. lol

September 3, 2016 at 11:02 am #35824Great work, Drybonz! Great to see the impact that a redraw can have on a table like this one. Also, that is quite impressive for a first project! I don’t know how long it took, but there are a few VPX tables that have come out lately from Kees and others that could really benefit from this. dboyrecords used to convert lots of tables from VP8 to VP9, but there wasn’t effort to redraw them using Illustrator. It would be great to see more redraws like this on more tables. I’m interested in giving it a try, and could probably make it look good using Inkscape, but I don’t know about playfield size and accurate layouts and placements that seem to be very important.

September 3, 2016 at 12:18 pm #35833Hey Scott… go for it! Just find a table that has a good layout already, but a crappy looking playfield and export it and start playing around with it until you get the hang of it. That’s all I did… as for how long it took… a lot longer than it should have, but I learned a lot so the next one should go faster (maybe… lol).

September 3, 2016 at 3:44 pm #35846Scott… Bonz is right… just go for it… and as some incentive using Inkscape for redraws is the perfect free program
FranzLeo is a FP builder that uses Inkscape and this is what he’s pulling off…. he’s amazing
just think about this table with VPX lighting… would be mind blowing…You need to login in order to like this post: click here
