That said…. if you are not devoting any backglass to a speaker panel (ie you have a real DMD), you could pretty easily replace the B2S backglass image with one that includes the topper on top. I personally think it would look weird though.

Cheers. Especially easy to use them as DMD images on screen 3 during PBX menu. ;) (just crop and resize to suit the cab’s DMD screen)

April 19, 2017 at 6:08 pm #52474Regarding a standardized resolution… I like the idea of using a ultrawide monitor for my toppper display. The ratio of this UWHD standard is 21:9, so if the topper images and videos were made to that resolution then there would be no cropping or resizing needed. Also, people using standard 16:9 ratio screens could have a standard depth in which to sink their topper monitor into be backbox. I’ve noticed that many of the existing videos and images are nearly the correct dimension (21:9). Does this seem like a good standard to apply?
Here’s some references so you can see what I’m talking about:

April 19, 2017 at 9:56 pm #52510Mine are made to 1920×760, for no particular reason other than that’s as low as I could mount my 16:9 screen before it interfered with my fan vent on the back of my top box….. plus there were no others in existence that I could find to replicate.
So ratio wise, that’s 21×8.35 if my maths is correct.
Pretty close to 21:9.
Other’s have used my ratio also, as they started off with my images, but it does make sense that a standard “screen size” be used. I can’t speak for others, but I could pretty easily move my screen up a touch to cater for 21×9.
Plus, all the static toppers I have created could easily be stretched that little bit extra and I doubt it would even be that noticeable that the contents were stretched.
Videos on the other hand? Can they be stretched? This is something that we should get on top of early, before too many more topper creations are out there.
I’ll put t to the Visual Pinball Addicts Facebook Group (as that is the primary driving point for toppers at this stage) but I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts here too.

April 20, 2017 at 3:14 pm #52531Nothing wrong with the effort to get something to display with PinballX but the effort should really go to figuring out multi-monitor capabilities with the current B2S Server. Get that working and then PBXRecorder may be expanded to include video capture of topper displays.
Where to start?
Stat has an FT dB2S with topper support:
There is also this TAF dB2S with topper support:
http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=10203
Images may have to be heavily edited and redone in B2S Designer to properly span across two displays and have the results look good with satisfactory performance. Would have to figure out how to setup screenres.txt, etc. At this point it seems like it would be doable to me.

April 20, 2017 at 4:03 pm #52535Thanks Carny, Ultimately the goal would be to have toppers driven from B2S (or everything from VP) but “baby steps”.
I think if support continues to grow at the rate it is currently, then we would have an obvious “ready made market” for a more advanced system and devs & authors may push it along somewhat.
It was only a short time ago when my lonely topper was looked upon as a joke by many, but just having a few people on board has moved it along heaps in a very short time…. if the right people get involved to take it to the next level, then toppers would have a “top” future. ;)

May 8, 2017 at 12:09 pm #53748Now that Pinball X has official topper support (pictures and videos) on a dedicated screen, we can create and use topper media correctly.
Before you needed to use them with your “DMD” screen (Pinball X only supported media on 3 screens at the time), but now you can use ANY screen you want…so that means support for a 4th screen specifically for toppers. This is a big deal for those of use who use a monitor for our DMD.
Since you are able to specify the “size”, “screen #”, and “position” of your Topper media, there is no reason to have Topper pics and videos with the extra black space on the bottom. If you only have the actual Topper image, then Pinball X will make it fit however you want it to….just like it does with DMD media. Some people may use different resolutions, aspect ratios, etc for their topper screen, and the current way the images are made won’t work well in all situations. Having just the image (with no black bottom) will work for everyone.
As a result of this excellent new feature in Pinball X, I am finally able to create media for my cabinet MUCH easier, and the way I always wanted to. I don’t have an actual topper screen, but my dual middle screen in my cabinet has an extra screen space (originally used for marquees, control panels, extra video displays, etc) that can make great use of these Toppers. I no longer have to combine two video elements into one video. Now I can display DMD and Topper videos on my middle 3rd screen, and it works great!
I have to crop the images a little bit to make it look better, but most of them look great. I also have decided to use videos, and movie trailers, for some tables that will still display during gameplay. It looks pretty good.
If only we had a way to display videos during VPX gameplay (like UltraDMD), but be able to play videos of ANY resolution.
I will post a video of what it looks like when I’m done.

May 8, 2017 at 2:42 pm #53752Yes there is no need. We have simply been cropping and resizing or leaving as is to suit our own installs.
When I created the original toppers, I left the black as it simply made no difference for me. Once they started to be shared, I left it to avoid confusion regarding the “sunken” installation for the wide screen effect.
Without it I feared an influx of “why do my topper images look stretched?” questions. So it was a simple way of preserving aspect ratio regardless of how someone’s screen was set to operate. Of course, using these in a split DMD style screen then requires a simple crop….. videos of course are a different matter. I’m not a video man, so have no idea about creating custom resolutions/aspect ratios etc. :(

May 8, 2017 at 3:58 pm #53754That’s what I have done with the images and videos….simple crops. I use Tom’s Convert-it! (Pinball X creator) to do simple video crops and conversions….but if I need to crop only the bottom or anything uneven, then I use Ripbot.
I saw someone on Visual Pinball Addicts on FB that has built a similar middle screen setup to mine…he just has his DMD on top….but he is also using these toppers in a similar manner. Man I wished this update for Pinball X came out last year….would have made my life soooooo much easier.

May 8, 2017 at 4:31 pm #53755It’s prob time we posted a list of ‘Topper Tools’ here and over at VPA… We all know how to crop and resize a still image, but video is a different kettle of fish for many of us.
Perhaps even a video tutorial here?
I know that I’ll be investigating Convert-it! and Ripbot today. :)

May 13, 2017 at 7:53 am #53981Awesome new feature that is working fantastic for me! (I use the Toppers for my dual middle screen) I had to crop them all to make them fir, but it works well for my setup!
I’ve added a whole bunch of these video and image Toppers, and have made a video that shows them them off in Pinball X and VPX!
I cropped and added movie trailers that look great and work well too! I also added “Billy the Big Mouth Bass” as my Fish Tales Topper!
