Hi, i’m new so this maybe a stupid question, but why aren’t the ROM files needed to play tables included in the .VPX table download? Surely it would make sense to have everything in 1 download rather than having to go searching for the different parts?
I downloaded a bunch of tables yesterday but 99% didnt have the ROM files so i have to start trying to find those and they don’t seem nearly as easy to find?
thanks.

Google is a great tool. It will tell you many things. Including why roms are never a part of a table download.

February 6, 2020 at 6:21 am #161961There is also the fact that roms live kind of their own life. I admit, almost all roms doesn’t change, but some do and then it just become confusing again. You should look at your rom collection the same way you treat your tables. Validate and rebuild from time to time and you will never end up with issues. Worse is it when authors adds eg. core.vbs with their table. Some months later all tables that rely on new stuff stops to work and you newbies are coming here asking why things ain’t working.
Better keep roms, db2s, tables, scripts separate !

Thanks, i’ve found an all in one download that should make things simpler. I do think that at least when tables are created they should refer to the ROM they are based off (some do, which is very helpful!)

February 6, 2020 at 8:31 am #161969All do, it’s in the script. If it’s not, then you don’t need one. This is not a hobby where you jump in and you get all the answers. It requires time and effort to understand it,but I promise you, it’s worth it in the end.

February 6, 2020 at 11:01 am #161975Best way to think about it is that Visual Pinball is a project instead of a product. One contributor might make a backglass, another might build the table, another is making front-end wheel images. It is sometimes fun to put together a full all-in-one upload but it takes coordination and energy that volunteers may not want to expend. It also forwards the perception of VP as product, which I would think removes the incentive for everyone to contribute to make this all happen.
Personally sharing this stuff outside of the people actively making this hobby happen is an afterthought except to hopefully inspire some others to start contributing. The last thing I’m concerned with is making it easier for non-contributors.

You come here with an abundance of ignorance, ask for answers, and proceed to be rude. Good job bud.
Go buy the pinball arcade or PinballFX collections, those ‘products’ will work out of the box for you since you PAY for them.

February 6, 2020 at 1:04 pm #161992It was my understanding that having roms with tables was a copyright issue. Thats why I thought they were kept seperate. I could be wrong. But thats what I thought. And now I am a “Pillock”. Lol

I was under this impression as well. The tables alone are fan-art? Keeping things separate seems a way to fly below the radar. Plus, it was a real hoot ‘figuring’ all this stuff out.

February 6, 2020 at 1:42 pm #161996@r4tg Word of advice: when you’re new to a community and people give you advice, listen to it, don’t insult them. Look at their stats: if they’ve been thanked, it means they’re helping and contributing to the community. But the people who have replied above deserve respect. The good news is almost everyone here readily accepts apologies and moves on.

That is also my understanding, you Pillock.
I was being extra-philosophical on why an all-in-one download might not be beneficial to the overall good but in the end legality is enough of a reason.

February 6, 2020 at 2:55 pm #162004VPX does not execute roms itself. It is VPinMAME that is the emulator. VPinMAME is a pinball specific derivation of the MAME project. MAME as an emulator and as such it is legal software. The vast majority of the time, the game code is covered under copyright. Downloading/possessing game code when you don’t own the actual machine is likely a copyright violation and against the law in most countries on Earth. Happily, it is kind of a grey area and finding the game code online is not hard to do. It’s on you if you want to download and misuse the code and break the law. Community members have to accept that risk. But, I would not expect others to stick their necks out to make it easier for you to commit software piracy. In short, if it were me I would not include copyrighted roms with software or tables.

Hi, thanks for the advice and i think you can see i have listened to the people that gave advice and thanked them for it. The post you are refering to however included no advice and an insult to boot!
“Rom are usually never part of the download” – Yes i know, i ased why!
“Google is a great tool. It will tell you many things” – Yes very clever, everyone knows how to use google thank you, no need to try and make me look stupid/lazy.
“Google……..google……..google.” – Of course i had aleady tried googling for the answer and hadn’t found it, hence asking here.
I never understand why people who know the answer can be bothered to take the time to reply to a thread and say look yourself, when in that same time they could have just answered the question? If you can’t be bothered just dont reply!
Anyway they did reply with a helpful answer later on as well as plenty other people, so thanks for those replies.

February 7, 2020 at 7:45 am #162055No one was trying to make you look stupid. I just did not want to draw any attention to the legality of the issue. When you do that in a post, it is now a “google” result. So now, when you search for Roms and legality, you get VPinball. I was trying to not draw attention to the site.
No offence, but before I ask a question on here, so that I don’t look stupid, I google the shit out of it. See if I can find the answer, and save the difficult questions for here.
I didn’t come on here and ask everyone what a pillock was. I googled it. Seen it was a insult and decided who you were.
Calling people names who try to help you out, without drawing attention to the community, is not the way to get help.
I am sorry you took my answer the wrong way. It was not attended as an insult. I am not the first person on here to bring up Google.
