Who has designed their cabs with a fold down backbox on swing arms?

I didn’t, as it was planned to sit in just one spot and if I ever did need to move the cab then it’s not a big deal to fully remove the backbox anyway.

That said, I am thinking about adding the backbox swing arms purely for looks. My cab is black top over white bottom and I’ve no intention of wrapping it (only because I could never decide what to wrap it as), but now I want to “chunk it up” a little. It’s a little too “clean & nice” if you know what I mean.

I’ve just added fake guards around the flipper buttons using black adhesive vinyl and it looks great! The little bit of black has really helped reduce all that white on the sides and it is this leading me towards the swing arms, in the hope they will have the same effect at the rear of the cab.

So has anyone installed these (or fake versions of) even though “physically” they have no purpose?  If you have made fake ones, I would love to see what you have made them from and how they look on the cab.

      Cheers, Rusty

My cab builds all swing down just like real pinballs. I just used regular backbox pinball brackets same as real pinball. Works great. Just need to have extra length for wires to backbox to allow for folding down

In the middle of faking them with a bit of thin board, some parts from an old wireless radio, a piece of chewed gum and a paper clip.

Over $60 to get a pair here…. my fake ones are free ;)

btw, how long is the 90 degree section along the fold? I’m not sure that the base of my backbox would have the depth????

                I made a mockup and just blu-tac’ed it to the cab….  I don’t think I like it.

It’s probably a bit thick. If anyone gets the time to measure their real one for me it would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT:  OK I have left it on, I’ve even added the nut… it’s growing on me.  In fact, I think I now like it. ;)

I finally got around to adding the finished “fake” backbox swing arms.  They are attached to the underside of the backbox via small brackets using double sided tape and are not attached to the cabinet bottom at all. So they are easily removed (without damage) if I ever decide to add real ones or perhaps even apply a wrap.

The objective when starting these, was to break up the mass of white that is the bottom box…. and I think these hinges, along with the addition of the black flipper button surrounds and a thin black angle along the base of the cab, have done just that.  While it’s hard to show in pics due to angles and forced perspectives… in person, it’s looking rather swish if I do say so myself. :yahoo:

:good: Looks like a real pinball cab now. Only thing is bolt should be a carriage head(round) but other then that looks better with the hinge I think :good:
