I’ve had SSF working with VPX using a StarTeck 7.1 usb audio card in 5.1 mode – and it works great. There are 4 impactors, plus two bass shakers driven by two Lvpin 2.1 amps. However, I’ve not been able to make it work in 7.1 mode. When I set it to work in 7.1 mode, click on a speaker to test it – an error message says another device is using the application. Set it back to 5.1 mode and it works immediately. If I disable Realtek HD Audio speaker output, 5.1 still works but 7.1 no longer displays the “other device” error – but still no sound out of any speaker when in 7.1 mode. Can anyone help? I deleted the Realtek drivers and reloaded them – it shows up in stereo 2 speaker mode and can’t be changed – same thing after reloading.

Just added 7.1 SSF to my cab. This, in addition to the solenoids, makes a HUGE difference – a lot more than I was expecting.

The Creeping Feature Creature has invaded my brain!  It started with –  Initially I just want a full size cab with good displays. Got that done – OK, I’ll just add solenoids for the flippers. That will be plenty. Yeah right! Got that done – six channels left on my 8 channel Sainsmart USB setup so I added six more solenoids for bumpers, etc. Then decided to add slingshots. Built a Ledwiz feeding a 16 channel Sainsmart to drive the 10 solenoids. Installed it – played with it for a week, then ordered a Stern shaker assembly, replay knocker, and a power car window opener motor/gearbox to use as the gear motor. Installed and played with that for about two days, Then purchased 4 impactors, and a 7.1 audio card and set that up.

As a result, I have one hell of a machine – and got a good education in the process. H’mmm now maybe I’ll look into a chime unit!

So far I’ve only had one solenoid fail – but that was due to a faulty (open) suppression diode. I originally tried Siemens contactors for the flippers – they worked fine – but found that they aren’t as responsive as the Ford contactors when a flipper is rapidly repeated. I ran into a great one time deal and purchased 25 Ford solenoids real cheap so have lots of spares.

The red ones have more of a “boing” sound so they are used for the slingshots.

1020! – my mistake – blame it on me being a boomer. Anyway, here’s picture of the solenoids and driver.

I use the Ford starter motor solenoids in my virtual table. Only one has gone defective – but that was due to a bad protection diode, not the solenoid. Mounted to the cross braces as shown in the picture makes them really LOUD when mounted inside the cab. I have them working with Visual Pinball 10 and Pinball FX 3. Getting DOF & DOFLinx setup and working did cause some brain bleeds, but it sure does add realism to the games.

On a side note – once they were working as pictured on the floor, I mounted them in the cab from underneath. While under there I had the keyboard ready to load a table. When the table initialized, it fired all 10 solenoids simultaneously – my head hit every surface inside the machine.

I like the black ones better than the red ones because they are louder. You can find them on Amazon or Ebay for $10 each.

I was able to load BAM/FP and play tables with only minor brain bleeds – caused by my missing a step.  Thank you so much for this well structured guide!
