300 lbs? Oof.
You mentioned an alternate control panel to allow for play of other games? How’s that work?
It’s an X-arcade tankstick with a few mods I made. I will work out a way to either make it fit to the front of the cab or mount it on a small cart that sits in front of the cab so I can use it when I want to play games that need the other controls. Basically I haven’t sorted out the details yet. I want to get the cab finished first.

Amazing ! Museum quality right there, i’m guessing it will take some effort to get the cab into the house…..it’s massive.
Thanks Nemo. Yeah it’s going to take a cart and two people to move each of the two halves. The whole thing weighs 300 lbs or so.

My work is progressing nicely. The graphics and translite marqee arrived today and they look fantastic. The paint and detail work continues…

Thanks guys. The marquee is just a temporary to see how it looks… it’s printed on printer paper. I have a translight marquee and some decals on the way in the mail and should have them soon.

Sanding, sanding, sanding, filling, more sanding… And I finally got started on the paint work. I decided to paint the stripes and starfighter title on the sides rather than using decals. Once each surface is properly sanded I am painting it with about 6 coats of polyurethane and finish sanding it to 330 grit, then applying the paint.
I have the left upper cab all painted with the exception of a few touch-ups. Here are photos of some of the steps…

Here are a few images of the cabinet from the film…

Well, yes and no… There are a few other people who have built Starfighter cabinets. Also I am not building it just to play the one game. I have Big Box installed on the machine I will use with the cab and I have a ton of other arcade games installed on it. And I have a separate 2 player arcade control panel which I plan to set up so it can attach to the Starfighter cab when I want to use it. So I’ll be using it for all sorts of things…
Oh and the Atari thing… their game wasn’t even quite the same as the one from the film. And I think a large part of why it was cancelled was the amount of work it takes to build the cabinet.

Thanks Thalamus! This is definitely a challenging project but I am really enjoying the work. It is pretty gratifying to see your own work taking shape the way you envisioned it.

I continue sanding, and sanding, and filling… I also cut one of the two sheets of plexi for the marquee and built the mounts and installed them. The plexi looks yellow because of the plastic backing sheet. I finished construction work on the pedestal and will continue working to prep the whole thing for painting.

I finished most of the construction work on the pedestal, framed up and installed the rear access panel and cut and installed the upper rear angled cabinet panel. Next up is trimming the top edge of the upper rear panel and then doing a whole friggin’ lot of sanding and some putty work in preparation for painting…

Yesterday I finished trimming the marquee box and fixing an error I made in cutting the side panels. The upper front section was too short on both sides so I spliced panels in to correct the error. Now the shape is correct.
Today I got the pedestal about 2/3 finished. I still need to add the angled box sections on the bottom sides. I also did a test fit of the upper cabinet on the pedestal to check the height… Good thing I did because I had to shorten the pedestal by four inches to get the height right for me. I trimmed the pedestal, put things back together and took some photos.

I spent the day working on the marquee/top of the cabinet today. I will trim the overlap off the 45 degree angle top sides once the glue is good and dry. I also mounted the led light tube for the marquee and test fitted the left joystick and cut some of the parts for the pedestal.

Which nitty gritty are you interested in? I have pretty much shown everything I’ve built for it so far.

My work is progressing nicely I think. I am finishing up work on the joystick wells now. You can see my t-handle joystick being test fitted on the right panel. I would say the structural work on the upper half of the cabinet is around 75% complete now. I expect to get started on the lower cabinet probably tomorrow.
I knew this was going to be a big cabinet before I startred but I didn’t realize just how massive it really is. The upper cabinet is large enough that I can get inside it! I hope I can manage to get it into the house when it’s finished.

Well I finally got started on the Starfighter cabinet build. I have been working steadily on it for the last four days and am finding it to be a fairly complex build with lots of compound angles and requiring a lot of precision. Here are some photos of my current progress:
