Mameinabox is now redistributing tables and looks to have a “members” all in one easy download. What a looser! This is not acceptable
here is one example but he has many “downloads” which he just has no permission to do from this site! He actually agreed not to do this when he visited the downloads area here

Feel free to ban him from here, then, I would have no qualms about doing so myself. I mean, I get trying to make it easier for people, but he should just set up a site where we can register and upload our own tables if we so choose. And basically he’s also demanding payment for the “all in one” versus having to bring down two files.
Actually, I do note that at least the single links for tables, for backglasses, for ROMs, go to the other sites, and at least crediting the authors, which is actually perfectly fine. But still, all in one package for a fee.
And he also has some of the software, like DOF and DOFLinx, actually on his site, albeit not in the member only area, which is also a little iffy.It looks a little like he’s trying to pay attention to complaints and do it right, but there’s still a fail.
I went ahead and installed a channel blocker so I can ensure I don’t give him any views.

Right! He can link to actual download but he has pinmame from vpu and other stuff he has no rights to include like all in one downloads! How he feels he can just take peoples work is beyond me but looking at his work it’s not surprising he thinks he is doing a good job when he is not

It does look a little like he has tried to reduce his “exposure” to trouble to mostly those of us who don’t have enough legal standing to actually demand he remove things without attracting unwanted IP attention ourselves. Basically, there’s probably not a lot we can do but attempt to block him from future downloads.
Here’s a question; Does a link from his site to here come with a “http_referrer” indicator that it was referred from him? Might be a way to flag the whole “put up a splash page specifically for it so that the conditions against making money can be immediately presented to the person he referred”. If he doesn’t play by the rules, I’m okay with telling people wanting to check this stuff out before paying that there are supposed to be rules, that he’s breaking them deliberately, and let them figure out if they’re OK with it.

Honestly i’m getting really sick of these people thinking they can charge when everything is FREE here. This guy has donation links on all his youtube posts and thinks he should be paid for hosting files that are free here and other sites? Really makes me mad he hosts all the files from other sites like Vpinmame and many other tools that i dont even take from other sites and just upload here unless the AUTHOR chooses to upload the files here!

The way i see it is i have 3 options:
1: Create a page listing these jerkoffs with their username and IP’s so other people can block them(worthless with VPN’s) but at least would help
2: Shutdown site
3: Someone like @nailbuster creating a community approved “downloader” to make things easier for people but is it really that hard to download a file and put in a folder? If so then we do need something that is “APPROVED” to allow this

- That would probably help. It’s pretty obvious that a country ban isn’t really a good option for this.

- That might be helpful. I’ll be honest, yes, it doesn’t seem that hard to us to just drop a file into a folder, but I’ve also known people that, for them, the computer is a black box, they don’t know how to do things, they don’t WANT to know how to do things. Needless to say, their computer desktop is so cluttered there are icons over icons. This is compounded when it comes to physical cabinets, most people in the target market, if it comes to “pay someone for an illegitimate install on a ready to go cabinet” versus “they have to do it themselves”, if forced into the latter then they’d just do without anyway.
Granted, I’m not running a site, but the way I’m handling it is I’m not even looking for these guys; I’m pretty much to the point I don’t even want to buy a kit, since most of the places selling kits are also selling ready-to-go machines, I’m handy enough with a saw and drill anyway. I’ll probably be adding in “people building their first cabinets” as a thing to look for, unless it’s an enthusiast on one of the sites doing a Named Build. I’m going for informed ignorance, I know the problem exists, but I try to ignore it, otherwise I won’t release anything because someone’s going to package and sell it. The only part that breaks that is going to the Pinball Showdown, there’s an outfit out of one of the eastern suburbs of Denver here that is selling nothing but preloaded, ready-to-go cabinets for both MAME (just IP violations there, except the front end maybe) and VPX (the added license violations), and I make it a point to avoid their booth entirely now.
About the most of what’s going to happen for me in terms of mitigation is it’s going to inform the sorts of tables I build, which will be doing my own IP to the best of my ability (giving me lots more standing to, say, go after the local cab maker by telling the Showdown if they include my tables, plus reducing the effective desirability of my tables for inclusion by not being a hot table/property) rather than recreations or tables that resemble licensed tables.

I had the idea that unknown users or every user may should receive at each vpx start the message that each part of the software is free and combined also links to well known websites.
I noticed it today too. And tried to save users to spend money there for a combined download. The link to vpuniverse does not give my dB2S upload and also a different author as result back. It was for me instantly clear that a wrong link in a youtube description does force an unknown or lazy user to pay instead to say in public that an invalid link was given as a download reference. (I investigated the website also to see if my first assumption was valid as a reversal test proof.)

Maybe it is time that before each vpx start a stoppable message screen does inform unknown users that the usage of each part of the software is free of charge.

@toxie @fuzzel It is up for the vpx dev and the other users to decide the pros and cons. I think it is time to stop the free riders as it does may harm the future of our hobby.

Wow, this is unbelievable. I watched a couple of his videos. I laughed at some of his instructions on how to install and configure parts of the whole program. I was aware he charged a membership fee but for free programs that he has had nothing to do with? . I thought maybe for more in depth instruction.
Maybe ip blocking is the way to go unfortunately. Like I’ve said earlier. I don’t want these lazy resellers making a profit from our passionate free hobby. :(

Not sure what to do about these guys wanting to make money from this stuff… I just don’t get the mindset. The problem is…guys like this come from the “mame” mindset, where 95% of the community has nothing to do with the emulation or game creation aspect. So they simply aren’t wired to understand why this community is totally different.
Myself for example… I like to do tutorials and helpful videos…. but I always show people where they can get stuff and how to do it. Never once occurred to me to try to make things easier by including everyone else’s programs for people to download.
I for example was going to do a video about the different VP sites… and what they are all about, and what you can find there…how to be part of the community… that sort of thing. Is this kind of thing ok you think? I always make reference to VPinball since that tends to be the focus for pup / popper stuff…but I think it would be good to have a video to showcase the whole VP community…
If so…gimme a list of all sites you think I should include. I’m on most…but some like the french sites I’m not on much…but would be good to know who specialises in what.
Or is it better for me to NOT promote the various VP sites?
I also have NO problem mentioning…and very much emphasizing in a video about how NONE of this should be paid for. Its all free and is a “hobby”… NOT a business,etc. I can do a dedicated video about that… but I WON’T mention specific names or sites. Not going there… but getting the word out and explaining why,etc I think would be good. I have a lot going o right now… but I can at some point do that….just want to do it right.
Maybe I’m thinking too much about my own channel…but I think it could help out. It’s the least I could do.

Even with my FP DOFLinx PuP update to SLAM’s Jaws Ultimate Pro table… I’ve made it so my update can run on its own (without needing doflinx installed, much more work for me) for those with no cab or pup. That means that someone could download and use it without ever going to SLAM’s site to get the table. Not my intention at all…. and I always link to and promote his site as the place to get his tables. Problem is SLAM doesn’t talk to anyone often… but I always message him to confirm if anything has changed in respect to me sharing my modded version of his tables here at VPinball or at pinsimdb, vpu (he had no problems before). As far as I know he’s ok with vpu, vpinball, pinsimdb… the only place he doesn’t want his tables are at vpforums (respectfully can understand that given the nasty history there towards him), so I respect that, now that I know.

Maybe a authentication, verification process, (Fb, any social media) . Almost how PayPal does user authentication. Something like a pgp key. I’m throwing out ideas.
I dunno. I too have had the idea of a screen that is shown after a Vp table is loaded to let the user know that this software is an ongoing Free community project non-profit (is not able to be included just because someone took the time to configure the drive!! ) I see this all the time with hyperspin loaded drives. and anything associated with it should not of been paid for directly, indirectly. Or a code that is given only to known verified members in the community to unlock the splash screen/ watermark.
But then again would the devs, authors. Go to all this trouble to stop the greed. I’m all for it but I know my free time is limited, as well as all of you. I hope this doesn’t all come to a screeching halt..Â
