In early November I’d like to do a short Mon-Thurs morning livestream where I take an existing VPX game and raytrace some textures for it in Blender. I’m hoping someone is willing to nominate their game as a guinea pig.
Good candidates would be games pre-1986 that could use some raytraced lighting. You would have to not mind someone else messing with the textures of your game. This isn’t a “your game isn’t any good, let’s fix it” sort of thing, just an exercise in quick and dirty game modding in Blender. If you are not the game’s author please don’t nominate it without the author’s ok. I don’t want anyone saying “x game has always sucked and I hoped someone would improve it.” I’m not into that scene, just trying to have fun with a game that isn’t one of my pet projects.
SO let’s see if there are a few nominees. In the end we’ll have an alternate version of a game with pre-rendered textures and maybe some rubber dampeners. Plus it’ll be a good way to enjoy our morning coffee together. Should be a fun diversion as we watch the world burn.

October 23, 2020 at 8:12 am #206117If you would like to use my Night of the Living Dead table, I wouldn’t mind. It is based on Loserman’s 1977 Super Spin. I do not think he would mind and I think it could be greatly improved with raytraced lighting.

October 23, 2020 at 9:44 am #206134Ok @shannon1, I am pretty embarrassed to say that this was released while I was on vacation this summer and I completely missed it. And it is awesome.
My only fear with messing with this is that it is pretty dynamically lit – lights flashing, etc. – so I’ll have to give some thought to the best way to raytrace parts and not make things too static. In the meantime I’m just going to hang out and be impressed.

October 23, 2020 at 10:38 am #206135Cool idea, love me some more coffee and @Bord in the mornings! How about fuzzel’s Gorgar? It’s a classic most of us grew up with and already tagged “Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval” https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=11822
This version is already pretty fantastic, but who could resist a little Blender lipstick? I’m sure @fuzzel would be cool with it too.

October 26, 2020 at 7:58 am #206687Alright, let’s do a test of this idea. Never done a live stream before. On the Seawitch walkthrough I would mess up and try again.

October 26, 2020 at 8:33 am #206693Hahaha. Looks like starting VPX killed my mic audio. So there are 20 minutes of silence. I’ll try again tomorrow and see what happens.
You just missed the basics – drag the game in and get it textured. In about 20 minutes time it has materials and is lit. I made some Halloween jokes and mused on what to do with the lighting to keep a spooky vibe.

October 26, 2020 at 10:05 am #206702I’ll try for 7:50am CST. Just trying to do something different. I’m sure it will go over like a lead balloon.

October 26, 2020 at 10:15 am #206704That audio would have been helpful for us Blender impaired folks!

October 26, 2020 at 10:23 am #206705I bet. I’ll probably do the import again tomorrow just to be fair. Still think I can bring this in before Halloween.

October 26, 2020 at 10:30 am #206706Yeah, I would have liked to hear the audio as well. But to be honest, I’m in the shower at that time and might feel a little uncomfortable having you in there with me. Ah, what the heck. I’ll tune in.

October 26, 2020 at 12:48 pm #206730I am always amazed at what you guys can do with Blender. I will have to watch the video 100 times and take notes to be proficient. ?

October 26, 2020 at 1:06 pm #206731I re-recorded it with audio working. A little faster, fewer jokes, but at least you have a little company this time.
I’ll try again to do it live tomorrow morning. Everything is set up in Blender so now it is just creative decisions and setting up for rendering.
Thanks @shannon1 for letting me mess with this.

October 27, 2020 at 9:15 am #206816Once again, I am amazed at how much detail can be added and mistakes fixed with blender. I am really enjoying the live stream, so keep up the good work. @Bord you have really got to check out the movie. It is a classic with a ton of social commentary. Hopefully, when you kids are a little older they will enjoy The Nightmare Before Christmas.
