The Shadow’s Ring 3D by Dark
View it on sketchfab:Â https://skfb.ly/6QMBO
All my models are free to use freely any way you like however they are NOT to be re-distributed or used in any commercial product!
Resource photos provided by bord and sliderpoint. A high poly sculpt was created from the photo resources provided then using normal map projection to
capture the details and project them onto a low poly mesh. In my original scene I had the gem set up as an inner piece and a glass/plastic cover. I ended up just baking the texture onto the outter glass cover to save on polys and reduce ddraw calls with the transparency but it wouldn’t be hard to change it back if it was worth the trade in resources vs aesthetic.
The combined face count of ring and gem are:
6,744 Triangulated faces or 3,372 quads.
They could likely have the poly count reduced further if you wanted to take the time to delete a few more edge loops but I took it down as much I could before it would start to visibly hurt quality. So with that said I think they are a good balance between quality and performance.
You can see how the WIP (summary) of how this ring was made here:

You’re too kind, I could take at least a few pecs at it but I did my best and I’m 95% happy with the result. :)
One area of difficulty was fitting the little balls between the gem and the rim/edge of the ring, it ended up being too squashed to fit a good projection cage in the space. What I should have done was given extra room in the model then reduce the room after baking but hindsight is always 20/20. It’s not really too noticeable, especially when viewed from a far but the spheres in those areas are a bit squashed.

March 5, 2020 at 3:08 pm #165887Just a quick question, out of curiosity. I saw on a few pictures what looks like the ring is illuminated from below ? Anyone knows if that is original or maybe a mod or something ? I played this machine a while back, but, I don’t remember the rings or even if I saw them illuminated or not.

If you look at the ‘back’ side of the ring there’s a small input for wiring. It’s fake hole to save on polys but it looks like one when viewed head on – a detail that’s likely redundant since only maybe a VR user will see it but it’s there.

I’m patient. I will not be no way near what @bord can do with this – if/when he has time @stefanaustria
