I can’t thank you enough for this one. It looks and plays fantastic!
After having this machine as my daily player for a while, I have been missing it greatly, but now I am happy to be locked inside while the world outside turns to poo. …happy about the being locked inside, not the world turning to poo part ;)

Thanks for the 21:9. It’s greatly appreciated :)

January 14, 2020 at 4:06 pm in reply to: Does it make sense to compliment a full force feedback DOF system with SSF? #158626DOF and SSF work well together, as SSF fills in the blanks that contactors etc cannot provide. Personally (and full disclosure…. I could be a little bias here as my cab is the original development cab for SSF) I would add SSF first and then add the DOF toys that SSF can’t provide later. It will make for a cheaper build and less ongoing maintenance.
My cab has no DOF toys for feedback what so ever (just 4 exciters and two bass shakers) and any improvement for me, would honestly only come from a real shaker and a blower. Even my bells and chimes are bloody good, but they too could be a DOF thing if you wanted.
Unlike contactors, SSF is directly associated with the position of the impact on the playfield. So for example, as bumpers change position from table to table, so does the sound and feedback. Same goes for all other playfield elements…. right down to little rollover switches going “tink”.
While I hate directing people out of a thread, we do have a very helpful Facebook group (with many members from here) that has all the different configuration diagrams etc that need to set up effective SSF. https://www.facebook.com/groups/SSFeedback
I should also mention that part of the SSF system is SSFImpactor. It’s a totally optional add-on that utilises DOF to transmit sub-audible bass tones to the exciters/bass shakers for extra impact.

January 13, 2020 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Attack From Mars (Bally 1995) DELUXE Topper+DMD+Wheel Kit #158487Absolutely awesome looking! Is there any chance of some 21:9 versions in future? (to match our topper standard)
RustyCardores,
Didn’t know 21:9 was the standard for toppers. I’m running a 1280x 360 (720) topper screen that all the toppers I’ve been making have be set up for.
https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=42442
In the future, I will try to incorporate a 21:9 version as well.
That would be awesome if you could, thank you. re 21:9 …. yep, back in the beginning we decided on 21:9. Obviously there are variations out there on people’s cabs but 21:9 was the closest “manufactured” screen ratio to us all at the time. My cab is the original topper cab and even it is not 21:9 exactly, but it is close enough that a 21:9 topper “fits to screen” without any noticeable degradation.

September 30, 2019 at 9:11 pm in reply to: Welcome to the new SSF (Surround Sound Feedback) forum. #146601This seems like such a huge upgrade!!!! i just ordered 4 Exciters on Ebay. I am a bit confused about the Amps! do we need 3 total? on the diagram 2 says 2.0 and the other one says 2.1 . Would i bee good with 3 of these
SSF can be installed a number of ways, so the method you pick determines the amps required. The basic setups are….
The ‘Rusty Method’ uses 2.1 amps – this allows you to have the side exciters plus a sub woofer or shaker both front and back of your cab.
The ‘Rob Method; uses 2.0 amps – this again allows you to have the side exciters, but because there is no bass output for a sub, PEACE/EQAPO software is used to direct/share that bass to the main sub that you are using for the backglass sounds.
Those 838 amps listed do the job quite well and are what I consider the “entry level” amps. I have been using them myself since day one, but did need to replace one as the speaker terminals simply fell apart. The price was right though and I had a spare. If they fall apart again I will move to something a little better quality. ;)
For the backglass, regardless of the method you use for SSF, definitely get the 2.1 amp so that you have a speakers and sub. (so yes, that is 3 amps in total)
**Note: I don’t use a 3rd amp as such for the backglass. I run a set of computer speakers ie 2 speakers & sub…. these have the amp built in.

September 17, 2019 at 3:01 pm in reply to: Welcome to the new SSF (Surround Sound Feedback) forum. #145398RustyCardores, i didn’t fully understood your last paragraph. How can i access the ‘table’s Mechanical Sounds volume slider’? Is this a popup dialog, VPinMame provides?
Open a table in VPX Editor and have look in the Options panel. You will see two sound sliders. They are set to 100 by default, but if you set all your tables to 70 (for example) as default, you would then have room to move individual tables up or down to equalise levels across all tables. You will need more amp volume to compensate for the lower settings, but it will afford you the control in both up and down direction…… which the default at 100 does not, as it only allows you to go down.

September 16, 2019 at 3:28 pm in reply to: Welcome to the new SSF (Surround Sound Feedback) forum. #145309SSF is controlled by regular tables sounds. The volume of these sounds vary with the original sound sample and with any level the table author has applied.
SSFImpactor (an add-on to SSF) is controlled by DOF and these sounds are independent of the table sounds and the author’s set levels. So these will remain a constant across all tables.
Generally I find that tables are pretty even across the board volume wise, but for those tables not quite on par I have quick access to separate volume controls for my Windows master volume and for my BG amp. Between these two I can quickly adjust things while leaving the actual SSF amp levels untouched. (Don’t want to mess with these as they are finely tuned for balance and fade)
EDIT: If you don’t want to go Pinsound, there is another technique of setting all your table’s Mechanical Sounds volume slider to a lower setting and then increasing your amp levels to a new norm to compensate. Having all tables set lower means that if you have a quiet table, your have room to increase the mechanical sounds of any singular table. I use to use this method when I first created SSF, but now I don’t bother and simply adjust on the fly as mentioned above.

If trying to keep the cost down as you say, then I would first start with SSF (Surround Sound Feedback) and then add the DOF devices that you think you need.
My cab is SSF plus SSFImpactor (which is DOF driven sub-audible bass vibes to a bass shaker to compliment the regular audible sound events) and I want for nothing extra. I’m even happy with the knocker and shaker with this system, but if I were to add any real mechanicals then I guess these would be the two that I would add.
SSF and DOF happily live together and you can blend as much or as little as you like, it’s all down to personal taste.

August 22, 2019 at 12:49 am in reply to: Williams Star Light (So close to buying it yesterday) #142739Generally, when it comes to this sort of thing, I prefer not to think about “investment”… too many collectible markets out there have collapsed for me to consider spending money on something that I need to be able to get back out of it later. It’s nice to get money out of those things later to “break even”, but if I have to consider that as a factor, I also wind up asking if I should be buying that thing because I may not actually enjoy having it. I buy this sort of stuff to play, after all, and that’s where the value comes from for me, not what the later resale price might be.
Yeah I’m pretty much the same. I would buy it because I love it and love playing it. Having it hold it’s money or even going up some would be a bonus…. and if history showed that rare machines did that, well it would make the decision to buy all the more easier. ;)

August 21, 2019 at 7:02 pm in reply to: Williams Star Light (So close to buying it yesterday) #142685Can you barter your services for it? Doesn’t seem like many people care about rarity for valuation, only game play and art. But it always depends on the one guy somewhere who’s always dreamed of owning it and can’t find it.
No it’s a money deal only. I love it for the “Firepower like” game play plus the art, sound and lighting is excellent (I get enjoyment just looking at it), but it’s still a lot of coin so I have to consider the investment side. I’d be happy to break even in a few years as I have had a fantabulous machine for that period, but I don’t want to lose a truckload…. I was hoping that the rarity might help reduce the chance of that.

why not use a PC monitor instead ?
I did look for a PC monitor but found nothing locally here in OZ. I will have another look via Amazon and the likes. Thanks.

Ordered the lg 43″ , but didnt fit in my cab
yeah I remeasured mine and a 43 is a no go. :( Looks like I might have to build a new bottom for my cab if I want to go 4k.

but scans are needed over pictures.
What about really good pictures? ie 1:1 lifesize @300ppi
I realise that we are dealing with lenses and their curvilinear distortion characteristics, but lens profiling/correction can be applied. Just how super accurate do they need to be?

Looks like routing may be the way to go then.
I had considered the model mentioned at VPF, but the reviews kinda put me off….
“It has extremely low input lag which is excellent for gamers but the response time is only decent so some blur is visible behind fast moving objects. When viewed at an angle the image also loses accuracy, so the best picture is reserved for those directly in front of the TV”
Will see if I can find one in store.

Rusty,
That is utterly amazing! BTW- Have you played with those addressable RGB LEDs?
Rick
Nope, all just regular single colour strips. When I first built the cab a few years ago, I just couldn’t get my head around the DOF/LED stuff.

I’ve finally completed my SSFLEDs (formerly PMDLEDs) and wired the under and back cab lighting to the unused side of the trigger relays. Now when the playfield lights trigger on, the underside/back lights trigger off. All of these lights are “hard triggered” from SSF and no ambient sound triggers are being used.
I wish I still had my dark little arcade area from my previous house, as the effect is most pronounced in the player’s peripheral at night. I think some blockout curtains are now on my shopping list. ;)

The “original” Topper cab!
Looking nice!
It’s been 3 years, and I still don’t have artwork on mine!
Thanks Terry
The “original” SSF cab too! ;)
Get some art on it mate. So glad that I did now…. even though there were a couple of times during the strip-down and rebuild when I was asking “why didn’t I just leave the bloody thing alone?” lol
